Possibility of electricity shortages this summer: The California Energy
Commission and Independent System Operator have predicted a much lower
chance of power shortages this year than last. There are measures, however,
that we can implement together to reduce the possibility of outages. The
alternative is to risk a citywide disconnection from the transmission system
if we are unable to provide sufficient load reduction in Palo Alto. Clearly
this is a scenario we all wish to avoid. If a state power shortage occurs,
all electric utilities, including the CPAU, are required to meet California
central grid curtailment requests. The worst case scenario could mean
involuntary rolling localized blackouts for Palo Alto businesses and
residents that last up to a few hours.
Power Outages Forecast For Md. ~ Likely Brownouts, High Rates Blamed On
Deregulation by Lisa Rein, Washington Post Staff Writer, Tuesday,
December 4, 2007; Page B01: Maryland's deregulation of electricity markets
failed to deliver lower prices but instead led to rate spikes for millions
of customers and left the state vulnerable to power shortages so severe that
they could cause frequent brownouts, a highly critical report by state
regulators concludes.
Power
Outage Survival Power outage survival knowledge and preparations cover
basically two types of power outages; short-term and long-term. Either type
of power outage can be an inconvenience or a serious threat to life and
limb. While some power outages can be expected, such as those caused by
spring tornados in Texas or Florida hurricanes, other power outages can be
totally unexpected.
