Fallout Simulator
- An excellent shareware program that allows you to enter a nuke yield in
kilotons and a wind speed. The program will then compute the distance from
ground zero that the fallout will spread at given intervals and the strength
of the radiation dose. With yields above 50kt, a map of the world appears
and you can pick a target to simulate an attack. Use this to plan your
Disaster Response Operations or Evacuation routes. Size - 60kB, in zip
format, works with DOS or Windows.

War:
Home Defense and the Farmer
If this country were to be attacked with nuclear weapons, many farms would
be damaged or set on fire, even though they might be well away from where
the explosions occurred. In addition, there would be a grave risk that
highly dangerous radioactive dust (or fall-out) resulting from the
explosions would be spread over wide areas of the countryside.

1960's Civil Defense Info
- A web page based CD manual to help in times of nuclear war. Kind of a
cheesy conglomeration of shelter designs. Not all of the pictures work, but
the underlying links appear intact.
Nuclear Explosion Information
Interesting collection of information - be sure to read the caveat at the
TOP of the page.
Fallout Fundamentals Fallout consists of dust particles that have
been coated with radioactive by-products from atomic explosions. This occurs
when the nuclear or atomic blast is a ground rather than air-burst
(air-burst meaning that the fireball is far enough from the earth's surface
that there is no ground material uptake into the high temperature portion of
the mushroom cloud).
Blast Mapper: Would you survive a nuclear blast? Nuclear Blast
Mapper will show you how terribly destructive thermonuclear weapons are.
Effects of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear War This is the definitive,
unclassified text on nuclear weapons effects. A team effort is underway to
scan and digitize as much of the book as time permits.

Medical:
FM 8-10-7 Appendix B
Medical units must have protection from NBC attack and contamination to
survive and function effectively. The extent of protection provided is only
limited by the resources available and efforts of unit personnel. Protection
as simple as an individually dug foxhole, or as elaborate as the subbasement
of a concrete building may be used. Expedient protection from the effects of
biological and chemical agents are much less labor intensive.
Medical Aspects of NBC Defense Ops - Nuclear
(FM 8-9) North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO. The purpose of this
publication is to provide medical personnel of the NATO Armed Forces with
information on the biomedical effects of nuclear weapons and the impact of
the use of nuclear weapons on the different aspects of medical field
operations. This handbook has been prepared to provide those responsible for
medical support planning, training, and field operations with specific
information critical to the understanding and solution of these special
problems. The subjects covered in this publication are many and varied,
reflecting the complexities involved in the nuclear sciences and the varied
needs of the people for whom this book was prepared. Accordingly, the
subject matter presented includes discussions of atomic structure and
radioactivity, characteristics of nuclear detonations, descriptions of the
factors related to the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of nuclear warfare
casualties, and guidance applicable to the organization and operation of
medical units on a nuclear battlefield. In addition, information has been
included on the special problems associated with nuclear accidents in
peacetime.
Potassium Iodide as a Thyroid Blocking Agent in Radiation Emergencies
U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The objective of this document is to
provide guidance to other Federal agencies, including the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and to
state and local governments regarding the safe and effective use of
potassium iodide (KI) as an adjunct to other public health protective
measures in the event that radioactive iodine is released into the
environment. The adoption and implementation of these recommendations are at
the discretion of the state and local governments responsible for developing
regional emergency-response plans related to radiation emergencies.

Susceptibility. Stored, transported, and prepared food is susceptible to NBC
contamination throughout the TO. Planning for any battle or operation must
include food protection from contamination; food contamination detection;
and contaminated food disposition (decontaminate or destroy).
Army Survival Field Manual, after a Nuclear incident: Food Procurement
Although it is a serious problem to obtain edible food in a radiation-
contaminated area, it is not impossible to solve. You need to follow a few
special procedures in selecting and preparing rations and local foods for
use.

Governments and communities at all levels are planning for the survival of
our Nation in the event of a nuclear war. But the survival of individuals
also will depend upon the preparation that each person makes. Persons ready
to take the right action before and following an attack will increase their
chances of survival. This pamphlet describes what YOU can do before and
following a nuclear attack. You can greatly increase your family's and your
own protection by taking the Eleven Steps to Survival.

Understanding Radiation
U.S. Department of Energy. All matter
in the universe is made of atoms, and radiation comes from the activity of
these tiny particles. Atoms are made up of even smaller particles called
protons, neutrons, and electrons. The arrangement of these particles
distinguishes one atom from another. Hosted by 2Tigers.
What is Radiation?
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
There are two basic kinds of radiation: One kind of radiation is tiny
fast-moving particles that have both energy and mass (weight) known as
particle radiation. The other kind of radiation is pure energy with no
weight. This kind of radiation is like vibrating or pulsating waves of
electrical and magnetic energy. The radiation waves are called
electromagnetic waves or electromagnetic radiation.
Understanding Radiation and Radioactivity
UK Atomic Weapons Establishment. Radiation is energy in the form of waves or
particles. The great majority of it occurs naturally and we are all exposed
to it all of the time. It is all around us - in the atmosphere, the earth,
our food our bodies and from cosmic rays from outer space and medical
x-rays.. To understand the phenomena of radiation and radioactivity we need
to examine Nature's building blocks.
Types of Radiation

Radiation Surveys and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) provides
detailed guidance for planning, implementing, and evaluating environmental

dose- or risk-based regulation. MARSSIM focuses on the demonstration of
compliance during the final status survey following scoping,
characterization, and any necessary remedial actions.

Emergency ~ A Citizen's Handbook on Nuclear Attack & Natural Disasters:
A major emergency affecting a large number of people may occur anytime and

the United States.

Expedient (Nuclear) Shelters Building home shelters is not
possible for all people, especially for those living in apartments. It could
also be the case that after building a home shelter, a nuclear event would
occur when we are not at home. There are many natural fallout and blast
shelters in our neighborhoods. If we plan ahead, these shelters could be
accessed quickly and easily.

protection includes steps taken to provide immediate protection of
personnel/materiel and to enhance protection of mission-essential facilities
in the event of an incident. These procedures and planning factors are often
included in emergency-action discussions of "protection in place" when it is
required to sustain critical operations through an event or key
infrastructure facilities that may be a target.
