Perhaps one of America's most innovative inventors, his feats (or, at least, the belief in them) have reached beyond reality, into the realms of the mythical, mystical & conspiracy theory..

The Man

Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla was greatly influenced by Vedic philosophy, and thus the realization that Reality is a Dynamic Unity. He found ways to transfer energy through Space using resonance, based upon his belief that Space existed and propagated waves. Unfortunately Nikola Tesla's work was never fully understood, and because claims of extracting 'free energy' from Space sounded rather 'crackpot' (and Einstein's Relativity suggested (incorrectly) that it was Matter, not Space that fundamentally existed) his work remained on the fringe of Science for the past 100 years. Only recently has interest been popularly renewed in Tesla's work, largely because a number of experimental scientists from around the world have now confirmed many of Tesla's ideas and inventions.

A Short Biography (b. July 9/10, 1856, Smiljan, Croatia--d. Jan. 7, 1943, New York City), Serbian-American inventor and researcher who discovered the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. He emigrated to the United States in 1884 and sold the patent rights to his system of alternating-current dynamos, transformers, and motors to George Westinghouse the following year. In 1891 he invented the Tesla coil, an induction coil widely used in radio technology.

Nikola Tesla - Man Out of Time A VERY simple page; it mostly contains links to other sites on the net that deal with things he invented, rather than lots of information about him. Other sites do that much better.

Tesla on... Excerpts from Nikola Tesla, "My Inventions: the autobiography of Nikola Tesla", Hart Bros., 1982. Originally appeared in the Electrical experimenter magazine in 1919.

Others on Tesla Adopted from "Tesla: man out of time", by Margaret Cheney, 1981.

Getting to Wardenclyffe - A real-life story as told by Mr. Gerald Harris & Wardenclyffe Discovered

The Strange Life of Nikola TeslaA 47 page PDF file which contains (in addition to several photos of the man) what appears to be an autobiography. Definitely worth the wait for this file to download. Worth saving to the hard drive.

To the Smithsonian or Bust: The Scientific Legacy of Nikola Tesla by Zara Herskovits. Yale celebrated Tesla's accomplishments during his lifetime by awarding him an honorary MA degree in 1894. Over a century later, Tesla is again being honored by Yale, with a bronze sculpture that graces the basement entryway of the Becton Engineering and Applied Science Center. The bust was presented to Yale by John W. Wagner, a third-grade teacher from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who initiated and coordinated a letter writing campaign to fund the sculpture. Mr. Wagner's students practiced their penmanship composing over one hundred letters to solicit donations from citizens and corporation leaders throughout the world. Excellent, not-so-short biography.

Nikola Tesla - Erased at the Smithsonian (by John W. Wagner) Our class hero is Nikola Tesla because he is the underdog of electrical history, yet his scientific discoveries brought us the prosperity we enjoy today. I encourage you to continue reading our incredible story of how my students are making their mark on history for Nikola Tesla. Perhaps you will even want to give us a helping hand in some small way. We can certainly use all the help we can get.

The Inventions

Nikola Tesla’s Radiant Energy System In 1901 Nikola Tesla was granted several patents for a system of radiant energy transmission and reception. The system utilized "natural media" such as the atmosphere and ground to transmit power with virtually no losses. A decade earlier, Tesla had destroyed the DC power industry with his superior AC system. Now he was poised to do it again, with broadcast power.

Tesla’s Electric Car This one will make you go, "Hunh?" A mystery car once demonstrated by Nikola Tesla, developer of alternating current, that might have made electrics triumphant. Supported by the Pierce-Arrow Co. and General Electric in 1931, he took the gasoline engine from a new Pierce-Arrow and replaced it with an 80-horsepower alternating-current electric motor with no external power source. see also: Tesla's Electric Car - another version

TESLA FREE ENERGY  For starters, think of this as a solar-electric panel. Tesla's invention is very different, but the closest thing to it in conventional technology is in photovoltaics. One radical difference is that conventional solar-electric panels consist of a substrate coated with crystalline silicon; the latest use amorphous silicon. Conventional solar panels are expensive, and, whatever the coating, they are manufactured by esoteric processes. But Tesla's „solar panel" is just a shiny metal plate with a transparent coating of some insulating material which today could be a spray plastic. Stick one of these antenna-like panels up in the air, the higher the better, and wire it to one side of a capacitor, the other going to a good earth ground. Now the energy from the sun is charging that capacitor.

Chicago World's Fair, 1893 Quite apart from the lighting plant, the Westinghouse Company showed at the World's Fair a complete polyphase system. A large two-phase induction motor, driven by current from the main generators, acted as the prime mover in driving the exhibit.

Niagara Falls with the inventions of Stanley in transformers and of Tesla in polyphase motors the entire art of electric generation and utilization was changed. View an excellent explanation of Tesla's Niagara power system on the PBS site.

Take a closer look at Tesla's radio transmission device. Then learn more about the differences between AC and DC & explore the components of Tesla's AC motor.

Nikola Tesla’s Later Energy Generation Designs Ten years after patenting a successful method for producing alternating current, Nikola Tesla claimed the invention of an electrical generator that would not “consume any fuel.” Such a generator would be its own prime mover. Two of Tesla’s devices representing different stages in the development of such a generator are identified.
