Why Social Dance Etiquette? Dancing is one of
the few social activities that can put you "cheek to cheek" with a complete
stranger. Dance etiquette is a set of informal guidelines that
help make social dance interaction enjoyable for everyone.
Dance etiquette is nothing more than polite consideration for others
around you, as well as a concern for the safety of everyone involved and
helps in the effort to avoid inadvertently offending or harming other
dancers or people around you.

Some Favorite 50's Dances
It's funny how dance crazes come and go. Some it seems, like swing
and jive, will never really go out of style. During the 50s, there were
several dances that were "it" at the school prom, the high school homecoming
dance, and anywhere a band could play a tune. So, now's the time to kick
back the rug, remember some of those old dances and how to do them with us.

Baroque
Baroque Dance Among the important facets in the
development of French Baroque dance was the invention of a dance notation
system, which was originally conceived as a method whereby courtiers could
learn the fashionable dances. With the adoption of this system for recording
various dances, the French court dance and manners spread far beyond the
borders of France.

How to Analyze Dance Styles by Meissoun For a
long time, the term “style” was something that I didn’t really understand. I
watched performances or videos of Oriental dancers and was able to tell if I
liked them or not – but if they danced Egyptian, Turkish, Lebanese,
American, old, new, Sharqi or Baladi style was something I couldn’t really
discern.

Jazz
Jazz - history of jazz dancing
Jazz Dance History World War I had ended and a social revolution
was under way! Customs and values of previous generations were rejected.
Life was to be lived and enjoyed to the fullest. This was the era of the
"lost generation", and the "flapper" with her rolled stockings, short
skirts, and straight up-and-down look. They scandalized their elders in the
cabarets, night clubs, and speakeasies that replaced the ballrooms of
pre-war days. Dancing became more informal - close embraces and frequent
changes of partners were now socially acceptable.
Jazz
Drawing mainly from African rhythms, Jazz as a term first came to play
during WWI, and by the 1920s had been well absorbed into white American
society.

Del's Dance Book
Renaissance Dance Dancing was a favorite pastime in the
Renaissance. Dancing was an elegent form of exercise and an expected social
skill for the noble. (Franko,
37) There were basically two types of social dances in the Renaissance. The
first type were simple dances that were performed by an unlimited number of
people. These dances were usually performed in cirles or lines. The second
type were more complex dances that required a dancing master and practice.
These complex dances were usually performed for an audience.
SCA Renaissance Dance Homepage Western social dance in the
Renaissance is also being actively studied and recreated by many groups.

Square
Square Dance History in the US - DOSADO.COM The square dance is
an American institution. It began in New England when the first settlers and
the immigrant groups that followed, brought with them their various national
dances, which we now call folk dances, but which were the popular dances of
the day in the countries of their origin - the schottische, the quadrille,
the jigs and reels and the minuet, to name a few. After a week of toil in
building new homes and carving homes out of virgin forest, the settlers
would gather in the community center on Saturday evening and enjoy dancing
their old-world favorites. As the communities grew and people of different
backgrounds intermingled, so did their dances. As the repertoire increased,
it became increasingly difficult for the average person to remember the
various movements.

Swing
SWING DANCE: Styles & History Dozens
of significant regional swing dance variations are alive in the USA and
Europe. The number of distinct regional styles is far greater than the
number of distinct musical styles. To make matters even more interesting,
not only do important sub-regional variants exist, but experienced and
creative dancers may have radically different (fascinating, beautiful, and
developing) personal styles! Many swing dance forms originate in a specific
city, in a particular dance club, or even owe their birth to a one inspired
individual.
