"Remember,
It was the Veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It was the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It was the Veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to fair trial. It was the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to demonstrate. It is the Veteran, who salutes the flag, who served under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

United States Marines Antiterrorism Force.
Special weapons and tactics of this new elite brigade. Except for the
ceremonial swords Marines wear with their full dress uniforms, there is
nothing the fighters in that first war on terrorism would recognize at the
4th MEB. The 6000-strong Marine unit consists of four combat elements: an
Antiterrorism Battalion, a Security Guard Battalion, a Security Force
Battalion and the Chemical Biological Incident Response Force. See also:

Note re: E-mail rec'd 15 Jan 2011: "The article you have listed in your links 'Tarawa validation of Marine Doctrine' which you give Ballendorf credit for writing was written by me, James Marino, which Ballendorf acknowledges as mine. Please remove this brief but inaccurate description from your list of links. To confirm please contact Ballendorf who will confirm my ownership of the article."
SSRsi was unable to contact Prof. Ballendorf. The articles linked below are OFF-SITE and cannot be updated/corrected by SSRsi. However, we have had enough of our own articles attributed incorrectly to understand Mr. Marino's concerns. Therefore, SSRsi has NOTED the dispute here.
THE BATTLE FOR TARAWA: A Validation of the U.S. Marines by Professor Dirk A.
Ballendorf, University of Guam {authorship disputed, see
above}. Tarawa was a brawl, the nastiest kind of
close quarter fighting between two dedicated, relentless, and ruthless
forces. Eventual success at the Battle of Tarawa made it appear to some that
the amphibious doctrine was already "a firmly established doctrine" and was
the reason the Americans succeeded in capturing Betio. (Shaw, 156) Others
think the battle validated the doctrine, when it was really the
after-action assessment and adjusting that would validate the doctrine in
future battles. See also:

Marine Corps Association
The Marine Corps Association was formed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on 25 April
1913, by Marines of the 2d Provisional Brigade. John A. Lejeune, then a
lieutenant colonel, headed the MCA’s first executive committee. In a
statement signed by members of the committee, Lejeune and his fellow
officers declared the MCA would publish the history of the Marine Corps and
disseminate “…information concerning the aims, purposes and deeds of the
Corps, and the interchange of ideas for the betterment and improvement of
its officers and men…” That objective continues to drive the Association
into the 21st century.
Marine Corps League
Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and
fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the
interests of the United States Marine Corps, banding together those who are
now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been
honorably discharged from that service that they may effectively promote the
ideals of American freedom and democracy, voluntarily aiding and rendering
assistance to all Marines and former Marines and to their widows and
orphans; and to perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps and
by fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of
particular interest to Marines.

1st Marine Division Association
The 1st Marine Division was activated aboard the battleship Texas on
February 1, 1941. It is the oldest and most decorated division-sized unit in
the United States Marine Corps. Division regiments were in existence as
early as March 8, 1911, when the 1st Marine Regiment was formed at
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. It saw action in Haiti in 1915, in the Dominican
Republic in 1916, and throughout the Caribbean during World War I. The 5th
Marine Regiment was created at Vera Cruz, Mexico, on July 13, 1914. It
served in Santo Domingo in 1925 and participated in 15 major engagements
during World War I. These include Belleau Wood, Chateau Thierry and St.
Mihiel. On August 11, 1917, the 7th Marine Regiment was born at
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It spent the duration of World War I in Cuba and
was disbanded after the war. The regiment was reactivated in 1941.
2nd Marine Division Association
During World War II more than 60,000 Marines saw action with the Second
Division. When the division was formally activated on February 1, 1941, at
San Diego, California, its keystone was the old Sixth Regiment which brought
to the division the historic traditions of Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood.
3rd Marine Division Association
From the black sands of Iwo Jima to the jungles of Vietnam and into the
deserts of the Persian Gulf, the Third Marine Division has established
itself as Freedom's guardian. We are not the ones who wrote America's
history, we are the ones who made it. Our association is dedicated to
keeping the spirit of the Marine Corps alive. If you ever served with the 3d
Marine Division, we want you. See also:

Fourth Marines in China From 1927 to 1941, a unit of the United States
Marine Corps, the Fourth Marines, was assigned to Shanghai, China, where its
members were able to observe firsthand some of the events that led to World
War Two. The Fourth Marines sailed to Shanghai from their home base in San
Diego, California in February 1927 in order to protect American citizens and
property in Shanghai's International Settlement. Initially, the threat to
the Americans came from a conflict internal to China, but, within a few
years, it evolved into one resulting from the tensions between China and
Japan.
22nd Marines
The 22d Marines (Reinforced) was the first Marine regiment organized for
independent duty after the United States' entrance into World War II. It was
activated at Linda Vista (a tent camp suburb of Camp Elliot, California) on
1 June 1942. It was deactivated on 26 March 1946. It was reactivated, but as
school troops, at Quantico, Virginia, on 1 September 1947, and deactivated
on 17 October 1949. See also:
