Care to comment on "Foreign Policy?" Let Us Know!
Still pondering this..., but a few thoughts to outline:
As a nation, we are obligated to interact with other nations -
both those who like and admire us and those who hate and despise us. We cannot
live in complete isolation from other nations - but this
does not mean that we have an obligation to change their point of view, or even
acknowledge it when it is in the negative. Nor do we have an obligation to
police the world or rescue the inhabitants of other nations from themselves.
The American Citizens have enough trouble as it is defending themselves against
the machinations of their own government and the controlling corporate entities.
We fought our war of independence - twice - and
we may need to fight it a third time in the near future. There is no reason we
should, by government decree, be insinuating ourselves into other people's
business when they have the same brains, the same set of eyes, ears, arms, and
legs, and the same ability to act as we do. If they want freedom and
independence, then they need to change their form of government. If they want
security, then they need to stand the hell up and secure themselves. If they ask
us for help, then we may help them - provided they pay us for the expense
required to provide that help.
For sixty-three years we have been the guardian of nations in Europe, Asia and
the Mediterranean. We have spent untold trillions of dollars in this endeavor
and lost irreplaceable lives in the effort. In return, we are called
"imperialistic" and almost universally despised.
Imperialism is the system of building foreign empires for military and trade advantages or in other words, the practice of extending the power, control or rule by a country over the political and economic life of areas outside its own borders which may be accomplished through military or other means, and particularly through colonialism. ~ Wikipedia
The United States does not practice imperialism. There is not a single nation
that we have won in conflict that we have failed to return to the people of that
nation after the conflict. Invariably, we leave conquered nations better off
than they were before the conflict, and we ALWAYS allow them to establish and
run their own internal affairs in their own way.
The United States government unilaterally dispenses trillions of dollars in
manpower, machinery, food, medicine and monetary aid to foreign nations and
peoples, and the American people give privately with money, material and
personnel through independent charities - yet for all of our largess, both
public and private, we are labeled "the Great Satan."
We are without doubt the most compassionate and giving nation and people on
earth and we are hated and despised all the more for it.
There are few people capable of accepting charity gracefully. I get that. Most
will accept it only grudgingly, for one is often forced to accept their own
failure to provide for themselves in the process. Still, to hold their
inabilities against us for trying to improve their situation is simply not
acceptable.
The United States government has no mandate for acting as a charity - either at
home or abroad. This practice should be ended immediately. Individual Citizens
can do whatever they like with their money, their time, and their lives - but
the US government should be prohibited from such irresponsible misuse of public
funds.
Likewise, we should close all of our overseas bases and present the host
governments with a bill for past services and an estimate of future costs to be
paid - in advance - if they wish for us to remain as their personal bodyguard.
The US Government should be prohibited, by law, from acting militarily against a
foreign nation or peoples unless and until they have attacked our nation or
peoples. Conversely, the US Government should be required
to use the FULL FORCE and ability our
military forces - without half or limited measures - whenever we are confronted
with a direct attack. None of this pussy-footing around that gave us the
quagmires of Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Total force, complete and
utter annihilation of the enemy, and then complete withdrawal from non-US
territory. It would be a "don't mess with us" diplomacy. We are not nation
builders, but if you attack us, we can and will certainly be nation destroyers.
Foreign nations who wish to be trade or security partners must be true partners.
If you wish to trade, then trade must be on an equal basis. If you do not buy as
much from us as we buy from you, on a per capita basis perhaps, then you are not
being equal. Import taxes will be imposed or we will find another partner.
Likewise, if we do not buy as much from you as you buy from us, then your goods
and services will be given import compensations.
If you are a security partner, then the full force and ability of your military
must stand with us against all attackers, as ours will stand with you. None of
this "200 troop" nonsense, or "we will only provide non-combat personnel" crap.
You either stand with us - in full force - or you will stand alone. You do NOT
want to stand against us.
For our generous and forgiving nature, the United States has been on the
receiving end of a whole host of ill will and animosity. This has got to stop.
If you want to view us as a negative force in the world, try doing all those
things WE do for you, yourselves.
