Interpol Public Safety & Terrorism Page Terrorism poses a grave
threat to individuals’ lives and national security around the world.
Interpol has therefore made available various resources to support member
countries in their efforts to protect their citizens from terrorism,
including
bio-terrorism;
firearms and explosives; attacks against civil aviation; maritime
piracy; and weapons of mass destruction. Interpol collects, stores, analyses
and exchanges information about suspected individuals and groups and their
activities. The organization also co-ordinates the circulation of alerts and
warnings on terrorists, dangerous criminals and weapons threats to police in
member countries. A chief initiative in this area is the
Fusion Task Force, which was created in the aftermath of the 11
September attacks in the United States.

Terrorists Strike Fast... Interpol has to
Move Faster... Ron Noble ...
Transforming Interpol from a clumsy, outdated agency into a sleek, modern
force is an urgent, difficult -- indeed, noble -- mission. It is also a case
study in change with life-and-death consequences -- and huge implications
for U.S. security. The central strategic question is as simple as it is
thorny: How do large, established, slow-moving bureaucracies battle an enemy
that is fast, nimble, elusive, and widely dispersed? President Bush has been
struggling with that question at the FBI, the CIA, and his proposed
Department of Homeland Security. Ron Noble has the same problem but with an
added twist: He has to work with countries from every corner of the globe.
Wired News: Interpol's Virus Site Too Fluffy?
Computer viruses are often illegal immigrants of the worst kind, e-mailed
anarchists that, unbound by international treaties or domestic laws, can
sneak across borders easily and infect machines around the world in a matter
of minutes. Given the global nature and effect of computer viruses, many
experts believe that only an international partnership among security
companies and law enforcement agencies would have any hope of stopping the
ever-increasing threat of geopolitically disinterested viruses.
Interpol and the Policing of International
Terrorism: Developments ... We
present an analysis of the organization of counter-terrorist police
strategies by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
Historically, Interpol has gradually developed anti-terrorist activities
since the 1970s and radically expanded its strategies since the events of
September 11. Analyzing these developments, it is shown that
counter-terrorist strategies at the international level of cooperating
police agencies are driven by concerns over an efficient management and
exchange of information among police. The target of terrorism is thereby (re)defined
in a language that can be shared among the world’s police institutions. As
such, Interpol attempts to ‘de-politicize’ terrorism and strip it of its
ideological connotations that create political divisions in the world.
However, these efforts in Interpol and many of its member agencies to target
terrorism as a crime may not necessarily harmonize with the political,
diplomatic, and legal activities against terrorism conducted at the level of
the governments of national states.
