History of Terrorism
Terrorist acts or the threat of such action have been in existence for
millennia. Despite having a history longer than the modern nation-state, the
use of terror by governments and those that contest their power remains
poorly understood. While the meaning of the word terror itself is clear,
when it is applied to acts and actors in the real world it becomes confused.
Part of this is due to the use of terror tactics by actors at all levels in
the social and political environment. Is the Unabomber, with his solo
campaign of terror, a criminal, terrorist, or revolutionary?
A Brief History of Terrorism
To begin any history of terrorism (however brief) without first defining
what the term means might appear to be putting the cart before the horse.
Despite this, no such definition shall be proffered here.
Partly, this is for reasons of brevity, but mainly because any effort
to first define terrorism would mean restricting any ensuing narrative to
this definition. As such, this is not so much a brief history of terrorism
as much as a brief history of examples of that which has been (or arguably
could be) generally accepted to constitute terrorism. Not everyone will
agree that all these examples do so, and there are other instances that
could be so construed that are not mentioned at all.
The History of Terrorism- More than 200
Years of Development The
history of terrorism dates back at least 1500 years when Jewish resistance
groups (66 - 72 A.D.) known as Zealots killed Roman soldiers and destroyed
Roman property. The term assassin comes from a Shi'ite Muslim sect (Nizari
Isma'ilis - also known as hashashins "hashish-eaters") fighting Sunni
Muslims (1090 - 1275) and during Medieval Christendom resisting occupation
during the Crusades (1095-1291). The hashashins were known to spread terror
in the form of murder, including women and children. The brotherhood of
Assassins committed terror so as to gain paradise and seventy-two virgins if
killed and to receive unlimited hashish while on earth...
Digital History
September 11, 2001 was not America’s first experience with terrorist
violence. Bombings in 1886 at Haymarket Square in Chicago during a labor
rally, in 1910 at the Los Angeles Times Building during a labor dispute, and
in 1963 at Birmingham, Alabama’s 16th Street Baptist Church are only a few
earlier examples of indiscriminate violence...
Rise of Domestic Terrorism and Its Relation
to United States Armed ...
Extremist and potentially terroristic groups have, to some extent,
infiltrated and negatively impacted on the morale and cohesiveness of
individual military personnel and units. Racial, religious and political
ideological differences will continue to exist within and among active duty
military personnel, primarily as a reflection of the same issues in the
civilian society. Fair and effective means of limiting the involvement of
active-duty military personnel in extremist organizations will require
aggressive education and training at all levels, particularly among new
recruits.
Terrorism Research - What is Terrorism?
Terrorism is not new, and even though it has been used since the beginning
of recorded history it can be relatively hard to define. Terrorism has been
described variously as both a tactic and strategy; a crime and a holy duty;
a justified reaction to oppression and an inexcusable abomination.
Obviously, a lot depends on whose point of view is being represented.
Terrorism has often been an effective tactic for the weaker side in a
conflict. As an asymmetric form of conflict, it confers coercive power with
many of the advantages of military force at a fraction of the cost. Due to
the secretive nature and small size of terrorist organizations, they often
offer opponents no clear organization to defend against or to deter...

A Brief History Of Terrorism By Martin Walker: The word terrorism
was first used in 1795, a grim spawn of the heady period that brought the
American War of Independence and the French Revolution. The word was born
with the Reign of Terror, the use of the guillotine by the French
revolutionaries to consolidate their regime by killing their enemies and
intimidating the potential opposition...
