A home without a water supply is virtually unlivable. The importance of water for everyday living with modern conveniences bears this fact out. The most common supply for a home that is not served by a public system is a drilled well. .

Water Wells Tutorial. Folks, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this site. It is absolutely amazing! This tutorial shows new drillers how to construct safe water wells. There are also technical details and instructions for experienced drillers. You can even print out and disseminate the tutorial with their permission!

Water Well Helpline: This is also an excellent site, with much information, and you should visit it when you can (especially for updates). It covers "An Inexpensive, Do-It-Yourself Water Well", "An Inexpensive Do-It-Yourself Deep Well Pump", "How to Make a Drivepoint from Pipe", "New Life for Old Wells", "Dug Wells", "Developing Your Well", "Testing Your Well", "Building A Sand Sucker Well", and more. If you can't spend all your time online, we captured this page on pdf.

Hand Dug Wells

Large diameter wells An excellent resource for the hand dug well!!

Wells Hand Dug Wells Construction: Hand Dug and Hand Drilled. Most of the materials, tools, and methods covered in this manual are applicable throughout the world in a variety of local situations. The techniques are designed to be useful in the rural areas of most developing countries. Step-by-step plans outline construction materials and techniques to be used where skills may be limited. Although all potential situations cannot be covered, this manual provides enough background to allow workers to assess unusual situations, and determine what available techniques might be useful.

Wells construction: Hand dug and hand drilled Peace Corps Manual, sans photos (.gif files are referenced but do not load). This is a very extensive text only manual intended for use by development workers involved in the construction of wells to supply water to a local population for personal consumption. It has been designed to help field workers with little or no construction experience to assist communities in planning and designing a well, or wells, appropriate to the needs of the local population; assessing the advantages or disadvantages of locally available construction materials; deciding on the most appropriate construction techniques; constructing a well, or wells, capable of meeting the community's needs. Comparison of large and small diameter wells In considering whether to have a large or small diameter well, it is important to consider also whether water storage is needed, particularly in the poorly permeable rocks where wells cannot obtain large flows even in the best conditions. If storage is needed then cost of a surface reservoir or tank should be included in the small well option to compare fairly with the cost of large wells.

Digging A Well By Hand Water. We can’t live without it. It's been a main focal point throughout history. Today, most of us in North America take water for granted. But in the history of the world this is a recent phenomenon. Until recently, if you wanted water you had to go out and get your own. A Walton Feed article.

HAND DUG WELLS in complete safety using the Modified Chicago Method. Why hand dug wells? Why would hand digging be a viable option for a water supply in 2002? The answer lies in the cost of the alternatives, the capital cost of the equipment, how many you want to make and in what time scale. If labor is cheap, or available at little cost, a hand dug well need only cost as much as the equipment and a small amount of materials. If the equipment can be used more than once, the cost is even less. If the equipment can be used, without loss or deterioration 24 times in a year, the cost per well becomes very small.

WATER WELL - Types of Water Wells (air or hydraulic) drill rigs. Dug wells are still constructed in some areas, either by power equipment or by hand, but most hand-dug wells are the "relics" of older homes and were dug before drilling equipment was readily available or because drilling was considered too expensive.

WATER WELL - Types of Water Wells (air or hydraulic) drill rigs. Driven wells, installed by hand or with power equipment, are still common and widely used where geologic conditions permit. Jetted and bored (augered) wells are less common types.

Deeprock HYDRO Drill A commercial site that sells the rig for $2-5000 depending on well head and depth. Lots of good FAQ type info on well drilling, tho, for free.

Drilled Wells

Drillingfab: "Our goal is for the average Joe to get water, without getting a $10,000 dollar education and a degree in the school of hard knocks, and to help them get a rig that they can use - not just inventory for the next yard sale. The most important part of any drilling rig is Swivel quality, weight rating, and drill pipe size. Even if your swivel is made by NASA, if the water course flow size is small you can't drill fast or deep. You have to have good water flow to drill easily. Small swivels and small drill pipe are not good. Larger swivels and larger drill pipe cost more money. Don't buy a toy rig and expect to drill 300 ft. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is." Be sure to check out their Q&A section and the Wells & Well drilling articles on this site, as well as the Outlaw well drilling Stories. They seem like very accessible folks willing to help (where they can) with any questions you might have. They also sell plans for building your own well drilling rig.

Drilled Wells Water wells must be located and constructed in such a manner that they yield safe water at all times and under all conditions. Contamination of a water supply generally occurs when seepage from sewage systems or sewers, or surface water enters the well. Surface water may enter the well through the top or by seeping through the walls. Tests have shown that bacterial contamination is usually eliminated after filtering through 10 feet of normal soil. Therefore, construction of the well must ensure that the top and uppermost 10 feet of the sides are watertight.

ODNR FS 92-15 Before You Have a Well Drilled  The cost of a well is relatively small in comparison to the home itself, but without a water supply the home value depreciates greatly. Don't overlook its importance when you are considering hiring a drilling contractor. This fact sheet discusses some of the important points to consider and investigate before you have a well drilled. PRIVATE WATER SYSTEMS - Well Drilling Methods  The type of well drilling method chosen depends on many factors, including: cost, ease of construction, geologic conditions, well diameter, depth, sanitary protection, and intended use of the well itself.

Miscellaneous Wells

Water Well Design and Construction [PDF] In this publication we focus on vertical water-production wells commonly used to supply water for domestic, municipal, and agricultural uses in California. Our purpose is to provide readers with some basic information about water wells to help them understand principles of effective well construction when they work with a professional driller, consultant, or well servicing agency for well drilling and maintenance.

Water Wells that Last Generations There are 12 modules in this resource, many with worksheets you can complete. Each module can be printed from the PDF file version which provides a workbook format. The same material is also presented in HTML format to allow you to quickly search the material for information and links to other sites that deal with the same topics.

Water and Sanitation technologies: A Trainer's Manual Written by BRADLEY D. HANSON, Illustrated by Karen Munsterman; Peace Corps Training Manual T-32. The manual is primarily a technical training guide, providing the trainer with an outline of instruction designed to equip the technician and engineer with the necessary skills for successful field work as a Volunteer. Therefore, it may be used as the principal training guide for a water and sanitation course, or supplemented with material from the Role of the Volunteer in Development manual for a complete Pre-Service Training Program. Portions of the manual may also be used separately, for specific instruction in a single subject, such as ferrocement construction, or spring capping.

A CONSUMERS GUIDE TO WATER WELL CONSTRUCTION This booklet provides general information about well construction, maintenance, and abandonment laws and practices in Oregon. The information included is primarily for those individuals who wish to construct, abandon, or contract for the construction or abandonment of a water well in Oregon. It may also be helpful to people wanting to buy or sell property, and to people who own land on which existing wells are located.
