BTCV Handbooks Online Dry Stone Walling: This handbook describes how to construct and repair dry stone walls, stone-faced earth banks, retaining walls and other dry stone features. Build a stone wall by Charles Sanders Issue #70 The natural beauty of a stone wall has been romanticized in poem and picture for hundreds of years. There is a soothing permanence that can be seen in a well-built stone wall. I have built a couple of simple stone walls over the years and thought I’d share what I have learned about the process of building and working with stone.

Building Walls with Stone and mortar The method described here is a basic, standard landscaping procedure. Champlain Stone, Ltd. cannot be held liable or considered responsible for any damage or injury resulting from the construction of a stone wall utilizing our products or information included below. Designing and Building Stone Walls You don't have to be a New Englander to appreciate a well-built stone wall, though it probably helps. The first settlers found stone everywhere, pushed up by the ground as it froze and thawed. Fortunately, the same stones that stopped the plow, defined the boundaries of newly cleared fields. Decades passed. The earth swallowed up the settlers and the forest reclaimed much of the farmland. But the stone walls endure, faithfully outlining the old homesteads, now deep in the woods.

Rob St. Amant on dry stone walls I've spent some time building dry stone walls on our property. In a dry stone wall the stones are laid up as they naturally fit together, without mortar. Most of what I know about building walls, aside from what I've gained from trial-and-error experience, I learned from a book by John Vivian called Building Stone Walls, an excellent introduction to the task.

StoneWall I found an unpublished pamphlet by Carl Dill, of New Milford, CT that provides most of what you need to know in a single small pamphlet. This pamphlet originated as a series of notes he handed out to students of stone-wall workshops, taught through Western Connectiicut State University. He worked in the building supply business. With his permission (May, 2006), I reproduce a slightly edited version of his original text.

How To Build A Stone Wall In Your Garden The typical stone wall is made of large stones forming the backbone with many smaller stones used as a filler material.

HOW TO: `Rock-it' science for the beginner Building a stone wall may not be rocket science, but it can definitely be a challenge. The following guidelines will help you build a beautiful and functional wall that will stand the test of time.

Details of Ashlar Stonework The Ashlar style of stonework has been known for it's use in monumental architecture. Cutting the stones to uniformed shape and size is a requirement which needs skill and the time of true craftsmen. These factors in the early years of construction were the restrictive reasons of limiting Ashlar to monumental types of buildings.

Rubble, getting started Due to personal preferences, rubble stonework can vary greatly in looks depended on the craftsman. One major factor in the appearance of stonework with today's methods , is the use of cement. I'll give you my thoughts about very irregular shaped stones used on walls.

TOOLS Some of the tools used for doing stonework

Pointing One item that we need to cover may be useful right away. That is the method or pointing, or in some cases, re-pointing. If you have existing stonework from the 1700's to 1800's that has been plastered over, this may apply. It is very common in our area to remove the plaster and repoint the stonework.

Pointing Styles and Color You can achieve various "looks" on the same stonework by using different styles of pointing. The most common three are, flush, recessed, and razed. To also add a different look, coloring can be changed to give even a wider assortment in the finish.

Dry Stone Walls dubh ...self-indulgent crap from someone who should know better... Dry Stone Walls I'm talking about walls, specifically dry stone walls. I think that dry stone walls are one of the most charming features of the British countryside. Kind of a travelogue article, but interesting with some good photos.

Building a Retaining Wall Retaining walls come in two general types: wet or dry. The dry type is constructed without mortar and so, is the easier of the two to build. The main drawbacks to the dry wall are that it should not exceed three feet in height and it is not as stable as the wet wall.

Ancient Egyptian Stoneworking Tools and Methods: Copper slabbing saws Don't sell this article short! It is extensive in providing methods of cutting stone using primitive tools.

Anglo-Saxon and Viking Crafts - Stoneworking Stone Working There were about 300 years between the end of the Roman era and the 're-invention' of stone buildings. It wasn't that the concept of erecting stone buildings had been entirely forgotten, just that the size of the task and the problems of dedicated labour to carry off the project were nearly insurmountable. On the continent in France and Germany, people were still putting up stone buildings, and still renovating the old Roman ones. Interesting historical article.

A Beginner's Stonewall A BEGINNER'S STONEWALL Lessons I learned to Lessen your Pain Michael Kieltyka I have always wanted to build a stonewall. My wife and I have recently acquired a home and the property to allow this. I constructed a one-sided, serpentine wall, seventy-two feet in length. It varies in height from twenty-four inches to forty two inches. That is it. My wall building experience has been laid before you. However, having gone through this process, it is my feeling that I may be able to keep other novice wall builders from repeating my mistakes. See also: Stone Walls

Small-Scale Brickmaking (ILO - WEP, 1984, 228 p.) The information contained in the memoranda is detailed enough to ensure that small-scale producers should be able, in a large number of cases, to identify and apply the technologies described in the memoranda without the need for further information. Thus, detailed drawings of equipment, which may be manufactured locally, are provided, while a list of equipment suppliers, from both developed and developing countries, may be used for the acquisition of equipment which must be imported. In the few instances where the available information is not sufficient, the reader may obtain additional technical details, from publications listed in the bibliography or from technology institutions identified in a separate appendix of the memoranda. Brick Clay Preparation This is the first of four Technical Briefs. The other three will deal with "Moulding", "Drying", and "Firing of Bricks and Tiles". Clay for brickmaking is prepared differently in a rural environment - manually in small brick yards - and near towns and urban areas mostly in large-scale factories employing heavy-duty machinery and equipment. Since modern clay works quite often cannot satisfy the demand for bricks and tiles, rural brickmakers are increasingly playing an important role as suppliers and thus, are confronted with the demand...
