Batteries UNDERSTANDING BATTERIES By Lee Merriman

UNDERSTANDING SOLAR CONCENTRATORS By George M. Kaplan: If solar energy were very highly concentrated into a tiny volume, the result would approach a miniature sun. If the same energy were distributed along a thin line, the line would be cooler than the miniature sun, but still hot. If distributed on a large surface, the surface would be less hot than the line. There are solar concentrators that focus sunlight into a point or a line. There are also non-focusing concentrators. Each type has preferred temperature-dependent applications. Village Electrification Written by the FAO for developing countries, the info can be applied anywhere.

Village Engine Biodiesel This is a very interesting but somewhat badly-described project, which brings the concept of a village engine, with layshaft and multipurpose machines being driven. and it is a bio-fuel project! - a diesel engine running from vegetable oil....

MIT Researchers Fired Up About Battery Alternative Just about everything that runs on batteries -- flashlights, cell phones, electric cars, missile-guidance systems -- would be improved with a better energy supply. But traditional batteries haven't progressed far beyond the basic design developed by Alessandro Volta in the 19th century... see also: The Impact of Emerging Technologies- The Ultra Battery ...

MIT researchers introduce nanotech battery - Nanotube ultracapacitors would store energy on atomic level, providing what is said to be the first technologically significant and economically viable alternative to conventional batteries in more than 200 years. (PESN; Feb. 9, 2006)

Discovery Could Increase Power of Ultracapacitors - MIT laboratories have announced that they can improve ultracapacitors by swapping in carbon nanotubes which would increase the ability to store energy and increase the surface area of electrodes, making them comparable to batteries used in hybrids. (TreeHugger; Feb. 16, 2006)

75 miles for a 5 minute rechargeable car - Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru brand vehicles, announced that it will release the R1e electric mini car by 2010, and that the vehicle will begin road tests in Japan this year. The R1e uses a lithium-ion battery can be recharged to 90% of capacity in five minutes. (WorldChanging; Aug. 21, 2005)

A123Systems releases new Lithium-ion battery Utilizing nanoscale electrode technology, the battery lasts 10x as long, has 5X power gain, charges 90% capacity in five minutes. First batteries will be sold to Black & Decker for their... (OSEN; Nov. 2, 2005)

Toshiba's New Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Recharges in Only One Minute - A breakthrough technology applied to the negative electrode uses new nano-particles to prevent organic liquid electrolytes from reducing during battery recharging. The nano-particles quickly absorb and store vast amount of lithium ions, without causing any deterioration in the electrode. (Toshiba.com; March 29, 2005)

CompactPower.com - LG CPI is producing a lithium-polymer battery with the following claims: Higher discharge power; Lowest cost; Environmentally benign; Improved low temperature performance; Improved dimensional stability; Improved calendar life.

MIT powers up new Lithium battery for hybrid cars - Researchers at MIT have developed a new type of lithium battery that could become a cheaper alternative to the batteries that now power hybrid electric cars. (PhysOrg; Feb. 16)

New FireFly super battery uses carbon foam current collectors - This foam exhibits a sizeable increase in surface area for chemical reactions to take place and eliminates the need for heavy lead plates found in traditional batteries. (Business Wire; Jan. 17, 2006) (FireFly) (U.S. 6,979,513)

System Design Designing your system correctly from the beginning is incredibly important. You want to end up with enough energy to do what you need to do without spending your hard-earned money on renewable energy (RE) equipment you really don't need.

The School Girl Circuit and Motor (Simplified) is allegedly the most basic rendition of a patented circuit developed by John Bedini and researched by Dr. Peter A. Lindemann, allegedly based on the technology of Nikola Tesla, with follow-up work by Edwin Gray, Moray, and others. Bedini claims to have done away with the need for a discharge gap. The circuit is run by an input battery, and charges an output battery, while turning a wheel, lined with magnets, that serve to create a flux in the coils. It is not intended to run in solid state as some have attempted to do. There are some unusual properties exhibited.

For a truly independent energy system , your choices are solar, wind, and water If you truly wish your source of energy to be independent, there are only a few choices: solar in the form of solar electric panels, hot water panels, and passive heating; wind generators for electric production and windmills for water pumping; and hydro electric generators.

PRIMENERGY A designer and manufacturer of biomass energy conversion equipment with proprietary process design that incorporates low temperature, air starved, gasification of biomatter to produce an energy source for electricity generation, steam production, process heat, or any combination of these useful forms of energy.

PLUG INTO CLEAN POWER! The Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies (CEERT) has established the Plug Into Clean Power Campaign in California. With retail competition beginning in January 1998, CEERT wants California consumers to have the opportunity to send their monthly electricity checks to companies offering affordably-priced power generated from clean, renewable resources such as solar, wind, and geothermal systems. Power from clean renewable resources will be delivered to your homes and business the same way electricity is delivered now -- and it will be just as reliable. Choosing clean power will finally allow people to vote with their dollars for a sustainable energy future. That's why they expect that buying clean, renewable resources will quickly become as popular as recycling is today. Remember. Plug Into Clean Power. The Choice Is Yours. If you would like to become more involved, check out their website or email them for more information.

Theory of Heat Pump Operation Incredibly detailed, informative article.

Weatherizing Your Home—Caulking. Weatherizing your home by caulking and weather-stripping can effectively reduce energy waste. In fact, the cost of caulking and weather-stripping can usually be paid back in energy savings in only one or two years. This makes weatherizing one of your best investments in energy conservation. Weatherizing to limit air infiltration also reduces drafts as well as noise and dust, making your home more comfortable. Even better, it is something that you, the homeowner, can easily do!

Weatherizing Your Home—Weather-stripping. This guide discusses the practice of weatherizing your home through weather-stripping. Selection of materials, types of weather-stripping and buying and installing these products are discussed.
