Build a Blair Latrine!
The Blair ventilated pit latrine is very popular because: it does not smell,
it does not attract flies, it is safe to use, it is very private, it costs
little to build, it can be used as a private bathing place, it is easy to
maintain. See

Farm Tractor Videos I don't know if any
of these videos will be of any use, but it seems there is a possibility.
The ‘Arborloo’ This manual describes a different approach, but one
that has the same aim - that of disposing and recycling human waste formed
in a latrine. In this case the latrine itself is moved and the pit contents
remain in place - the pit becoming a hole for planting a tree. Wood ash and
soil are added regularly to reduce fly breeding and odour and leaves and
kitchen wastes are also added to assist in the breakdown of the materials to
form a humus material suitable for planting. The latrine is used until the
pit is about two thirds full. Then the latrine structure is moved and the
pit topped up with well- composted soil. The young tree is then planted
within the hole and watered and allowed to grow and mature. The most
suitable trees for this are paw paw, guava, mango, avocado and mulberry -
with the “passion fruit” - granadilla also growing well in such conditions.
Orange, naartjie, “neem” and Moringa are also being examined.
Because the latrine is linked with a tree we call it an “ArborLoo.”
INSULATING LIVESTOCK AND OTHER FARM BUILDINGS There are many
advantages to insulating livestock buildings, including a lower heating
bill, increased meat, milk or egg production, better general animal health,
more comfortable working conditions, etc. And the benefits of insulating are
realized as much in the summer as in the winter.
The Root Cellar Home Page.
Root cellars are nature’s way of
storing fruits and vegetables. And they can be excellent storage areas for
other things as well. A hundred years ago root cellars were one of the few
ways they had of keeping things cool. People not only put potatoes and
carrots in their root cellars, but their preserved meat, milk and cream,
fruits and vegetables - literally anything they needed to keep cool. Even
though root cellars didn’t get nearly as cold as a refrigerator during
summer months, root cellars generally were and are 30 to 40 degrees F cooler
than daytime summer temperatures. Here are 4 different (old & new)
techniques for creating your own old-time root cellar.

Making A Cistern.
As told by Glenn Adamson (born 1917).
Modern cisterns are made out of concrete and are usually underground. In the
early days many people didn't have the money to make an all-concrete cistern
and did it this way. [Link recovered 6/19/11]

Small Scale Poultry Housing.
Small Flock Factsheet, Number 10. Small scale poultry coops seem to be built
in almost every possible shape and size. Those building a new coop often ask
for plans for the perfect chicken coop. However, few plans for small poultry
houses are available. Many existing buildings can easily be adapted to
accommodate poultry. [Link recovered 6/19/11]

TAKING CARE OF YOUR OLD BARN Ten Tips for Preserving and Reusing
Vermont's Historic Agricultural Buildings. This web site provides Vermont
property owners with a basic guide to taking care of their historic barns
and farm buildings. It includes some general guidelines, a short history of
barns, ten tips for barn maintenance and repair, ways to adapt barns to
other uses, sources of advice and funding for barn preservation, and a list
of organizations that offer aid to those working on their barns.
Conceptual Plans that can be helpful
in developing building layouts and selecting equipment for various
agricultural applications. These are older plans that do not necessarily
represent the most current technology or the most recent construction
theories or codes. They are not construction plans and do not replace the
need for competent design assistance in developing safe, legal, and
well-functioning agricultural building systems. Colorado State University,
the Mid-West Plan Service, the United States Department of Agriculture, and
none of the cooperating Land-Grant Universities warranty these plans.
SSRsi Note - These plans have been taken offline, as far as
we know. We Have recovered them and made them available on a DVD disc - together
with many more designs and diagrams. HOWEVER, if anyone knows of an online
download site for these (or similar) plans - please let us know and we will
adjust the links.
