Women have always been a strong part of the wilderness experience, but the Victorian Age somehow made them feel either inadequate to the task or that it was not "ladylike" to be in the field. Those days are gone, and we are all better for it.

How Self-Defense Works by Laura E. Goodin. Self-defense -- in other words, keeping yourself physically and emotionally safe -- usually boils down to stopping a dangerous situation as soon as you recognize that you're in it. Attacks come in thousands of different forms: a holdup, a beating, an argument, stalking, harassment, long-term physical or emotional abuse, attacks with weapons, attacks by strangers, by family members, by bosses, by friends -- in each situation the safest response may be completely different...

BEARS AND MENSTRUATING WOMEN: On the evening of 13 August 1967, two women were attacked and killed by grizzly bears (Ursus arcto) in separate incidents within Glacier National Park (GNP). Following these incidents, there was speculation that due to odors associated with menstruation, women may be more prone to attack by bears than are men (Rogers et aI. 1991). The objective of this paper is to present the data available on this subject so that women can make an informed choice when deciding whether or not to hike and/or camp in bear country during their menstrual period.

SWS FACT SHEET: WOMEN AND DISASTER: The new gender and disaster subfield developed over the past 15 years examines not only how gender puts women and men differently at risk but the gender-based life experiences, skills, capacities and resources of women and women’s groups in disaster contexts.

Where Women Have No Doctor - A Health Guide for Women (Hesperian Foundation, 1997, 600 p.) Great book, but a shakey link - hard to load (at least, on my computer.) This book was written to help women care for their own health, and to help community health workers or others meet women’s health needs. We have tried to include information that will be useful for those with no formal training in health care skills, and for those who do have some training. Although this book covers a wide range of women’s health problems, it does not cover many problems that commonly affect both women and men, such as malaria, parasites, intestinal problems, and other diseases. For information on these kinds of problems, see Where There Is No Doctor. PDF DOWNLOAD

Sho-Me Women Hunters by Sheila Ogle: Women have hunted for generations here in Missouri. My own family tree bears branches of hunt for food history when my mother put rabbit on the table just in time for a dinner visit from her mother and father-in-law. More recently, she took an eleven-point buck, which scored 143 & 7/8 by Boone and Crocket measurements

Beauty and the Beast by Linda K. Burch: Call us vain, but many of us female hunters grapple with the issue of trying to look at least marginally presentable when we are hunting, while at the same time being sensible about warmth, safety and time constraints. In my case, it is a distinct advantage to have a non-hunting husband who never sees me looking my absolute worst after a full day of hunting...

Hunters Anonymous by Linda K. Burch: Many of us hunters have the little known or understood psychosis called "Pre-Season Hunters Syndrome" or PHS. It comes upon you the day after your hunting seasons end, and continues on till they all start again the next year. The symptoms can be easily recognized by fellow hunters, but are often confused for other maladies by non-hunters.

The Challenge "The Lady Archer" Lynne Frady What happened to the kids that couldn’t wait to get home and go fishing or on an evening hunt? What happened to kids that wanted to spend time in the woods squirrel or rabbit hunting? What happened to the kids that thought a great day was spent with their best bird dog and their Grandpa hunting quail or grouse? What happened to the kids that care about the environment and want to see forest and wet lands protected? It seems we are raising a generation of children that are all more interested in going to the mall to hang out or getting that new video game.

Growing into a Hunter Sheila Ogle

Friends and Mentors Judy Derrickson This year was to be the year my daughter and I were to put a serious effort into figuring out how to hunt spring gobblers. We had half-heartedly tried for an hour or so last spring, but to no avail.

"Blessed by faith, prayer, patience, persistence, and God's abundant love" Kimberly Lynn Kanapeckas When I hunt, it may look like I am alone in that stand, but I am not. A fundamental experience of the hunter lies in the strengthening of faith, patience, and persistence by prayer seeking insight and offering thanksgiving for the perpetual and limitless love our Father showers upon us.

The Perfect Fit Debbie Haberkorn It may take a little time to get everything just right, but it is really worth every minute you spend. A bow that fits you perfectly will improve your shooting.

"What We Do For Love" Hunter Education & Firearm Safety Linda K. Burch I love the shooting and hunting sports, both firearms and archery. One of my great joys in life is teaching and being a mentor to new shooters and hunters.

The World's Greatest Archers Judy Derrickson Legends of great archers such as Robin Hood and his Merry Men still stir the hearts of those who read their stories. But how many take notice of the greatness of the average sportsmen and women to be found in their local bow hunters' club?

Teach Your Children and "Teach Your Children" Part 2 Linda K. Burch As hunters mature into true sportsman, their desire to bring others into the fold begins to grow stronger. This is especially true concerning our children, other youngsters or even other non-hunters.

All My Dads Linda K. Burch I used to watch my Dad come home after hunting trips with a deer strapped to his trunk or with strings of birds, and I would long to go hunting with him. But most men did not take their daughters hunting back then...

Strategies for Survival: Women's Work in the Southern West Virginia Coal Camps By Janet W. Greene. Miners' wives in southern West Virginia's coalfields were an integral segment of the mining community but have often been unrecognized for their ability to help their family survive in the face of unpredictable conditions. This study is an attempt to spotlight the miner's wife, the difficult conditions she faced in the coal camps, and the manner in which she confronted housing problems and inconsistent wages.

Women's Experience and Gender Roles By Drew E. VandeCreek, Ph.D. The move to the Illinois frontier provided a challenge to women's understanding of themselves. Frontier life demanded a return to a household economy in which women produced basic materials necessary for their family's survival. Women also performed significant amounts of farm labor on the frontier. (MEG Note: I wonder how a woman would have written this article???)

LEARNING TO SHOOT: Does Gender Play a Role? By Gila Hayes, Contributing Editor. Take The Advice Of Those Who've Gone Before! by Gila Hayes. Interesting article about experiences of several women attending firearms training classes - and what mistakes can be easily avoided.

Mother's Milk, Mastectomies and Mineta (August 15, 2002) Back in March we talked about 'The Underwire Threat' (click to read) and airport security. It seemed then that women were being subjected to groping and ogling by airport security screeners in disproportionate numbers. That triggered a mass of e-mail from women that have had the lovely experience of having their bras inspected by the crack security agents at the airport. As far as I could figure out, the mystery of the underwire bra eluded the Department of Transportation. As a result, many women were - and still are - subjected to unnecessary and humiliating searches at airports across the nation, while Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta insists that we would not profile likely terrorists - say young adult Arab males who pay cash for one-way tickets.

Ft. Collins, CO, Women Arm Themselves Against Serial Rapist by Dave Workman. Responding to a series of rapes since May 10 that appear to be the work of a single, serial rapist, many women in the Ft. Collins, CO, area have responded by arming themselves.

Fighting Back Against Rapists When confronted by a rapist, should a woman submit or fight? It is one of the most frightening and confusing questions faced by women across the country. While many elements factor into that decision, new developments in criminal profiling offer guidance to the potential victim.

Give These Women Guns The newspapers reported Donna Hernandez of Las Vegas did everything she could to protect herself. Fearing that her estranged husband was going to kill her, she repeatedly informed the police that she feared for her life. She even went to court and got protection orders.

``The Seven Steps to Personal Safety´´ by Richard B. Isaacs, M.A., CPP and Tim Powers. "As the attacker dragged me toward the bushes he kept telling me what he was going to do before he killed me. Because of your training I was alert, prepared, and able to escape unharmed." Robyn Gebhart, assault survivor.

Defensive Carry Success Stories by Cynthia Anne Walker. A lovely, heartwarming story appeared on page A3 of Tuesday's Gilroy, CA Dispatch. A San Juan Bautista woman shot and wounded her ex-boyfriend, James Bret Fleming, last week as he tried to break into her house, waving a machete and threatening to kill her.

Woman With An Attitude by Galia Berry. Many women aren't emotionally ready to even think about handgun ownership, but they are anxious to know what their options are when it comes to being less vulnerable to the predators out there. I can't change what happened to a woman in the past, but with knowledge, awareness, the proper tools and skills, a woman can change her status from that of a "victim" into a "survivor."

How to Prevent Rape Article covers prevention in the home, on the street, in your car and on public transportation. It then goes on to provide info on defense if attacked and what to do if your defense fails.

What is a Full Power Course really like? One Woman's Experience Many people have powerful preconceptions about self defense training. Some believe that pursuing such training is, by definition, inconsistent with their personal identity as a peaceful person; some believe that it must be scary.

Trust Your Intuition Our hunch is that just about everyone could think of their intuition warning them if they thought for a few moments. When we ask participants in courses if they have ever felt uncomfortable about a situation but dismissed that thought, almost everyone acknowledges having had such experiences. Sometimes, unfortunately, putting aside that warning voice can lead to a troublesome or dangerous situation.

The Seven Keys to Personal Safety Here they are — a review for those who already know them, a mini, super-condensed personal safety course for those who don't.

Resistance works Research about self-defense and assault shows very clearly and conclusively that determined resistance works.

Stalking Police forces vary widely in their understanding of stalking and their ability to help protect an individual. This is rapidly improving in many areas. But, no matter how understanding they are, they can't put anyone under a 24-hour guard. The ultimate protection is what each individual can do for themselves.

Twelve favorite safety tips of the month Primarily for teens/kids, it's a good list.

Workplace violence The daily news brings us tragic stories of violent incidents that take and threaten the lives of ordinary citizens. More and more incidents are occurring in places we once thought of as being safe — our workplaces.

Believe in Yourself - The foundation of personal safety When you fully believe in yourself and respect and value yourself, you'll automatically give yourself the caring, safety and security you deserve.

Fear — How to make fear your friend and advisor rather than your jailer.

Women's safety — the empowering possibilities: a new model.

Why bother learning about safety How would you feel if you knew you were emotionally and physically safe? What would your life be like?

Protecting ourselves from negative beliefs As dozens of self help books tell us, our belief in ourselves as valuable, powerful, competent people is essential to our emotional safety and can help us to get more of what we want in our lives. Unfortunately, like pollution which can challenge our physical health, the negative attitudes and comments of others and the destructive things we tell ourselves can undermine our sense of who we are.
