The Coast Guard: The definitive story of the U.S. Coast Guard is recorded for the first time in this magnificently illustrated, large-format book. Stories of the "Coastie" experience as well as essays on history, lighthouses, search and rescue, aviation, the drug war, and the war on terrorism all share one common focus: the highly trained and motivated people who make it all work. The United States Coast Guard: The United States Coast Guard traces its origins to 1790, but the official USCG name was designated in 1915. The Coast Guard is the product of the assimilation of several government agencies over a long period of time.

Character in Action: How does the U.S. Coast Guard create, instill, and maintain leadership throughout a 40,000 member force spread across the United States? A former Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard and a best-selling author combine their knowledge of the subject to offer a formula for success. The Coast Guardsman's Bible: Broadman & Holman Publishers; Buy New: $12.98: Holman Christian Standard Bible, Specialty, Compact, with Slide Tabe Closure, Coast Guard Blue Bonded Leather (Paperback)

Bloodstained Sea: Michael G. Walling; Buy New: $16.47; Historic battles, daring rescues, and covert missions. The untold story of the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. Americans called it Torpedo Junction, Germans Devil's Gorge, but historians know it as the Battle of the Atlantic - the four-year Allied struggle to move desperately needed supplies from America to Europe through devastating assaults by German U-boats, ships, and aircraft. Now for thefirst time, Bloodstained Sea describes in vivid detail the heroic actions of the Coast Guard ships that defended Allied convoys en route through the North Atlantic to England and Russia.  Rescued By The U.S. Coast Guard: Dennis L. Noble; New: $20.76; Rescued By The U.S. Coast Guard: Great Acts Of Heroism Since 1878 is an anthology of the most daring, successful, and heroic efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard to save lives over the course of the past century. Man-against-sea stories, some told in the words of the rescuers themselves, abound in this exciting collection. Yet not every rescue attempt is successful; Rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard also pays homage to those who lost their lives. Historians will appreciate the attention to detail, particularly in the evolution of life-saving equipment across the years.

Lucky Sweetbrier: Tanney Edward Oberg; New: $26.95; This is a terrific oral history of a workhorse Coast Guard cutter in WWII told by its radioman, Tanney Oberg. If you like oral histories you'll enjoy this book. It's an easy and facinating read. This is a story of working Joes on a hard working warship doing a difficult, unheralded, but important job. Mr. Oberg makes no effort at overdramatizing events or spinning the facts. What you get is the unvarnished truth about life aboard the USCGC Sweetbrier during its war service, including its combat action. Wonderful Flying Machines: Barrett Thomas Beard; New: $25.17; U. S. Coast Guard aviator, Lt. Frank Erickson, on December 7, 1941, saw sailors struggling in the waters of Pearl Harbor. He remembered an article about a small helicopter developed by Igor Sikorsky. Erickson felt here was the ideal rescue tool for the U.S. Coast Guard aviators to help those in distress. From this time forward Erickson worked toward this goal. In the end, it cost him his career. Erickson ran head-long into those officers who felt seaplanes were the ideal rescue device. The book traces the struggle to have the helicopter accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard Action in Vietnam: Paul C. Scotti; New: $11.67; A well-crafted and engaging history of the Coast Guard's unusual and dangerous involvement in Vietnam. From the haunting account of the Air Force's accidental and fatal attack on the Coast Guard patrol boat Point Welcome, to the gripping description of sea battles with North Vietnamese gunrunners, Scotti leads his readers on an exciting sortie into the little-known world of the Coast Guard in Vietnam. Includes photos and a well-researched historical overview of perhaps the least-understood branch of the military.  US Life Saving Service Ralph C. Shanks; New: $22.95; The book is divided into chapters representing each of the old Life-Saving Service districts, and details the story of each region of the country through an unrivaled postcard and photograph collection and highlighted tales of heroism and tragedy. Interspersed are tales of other important issues regarding the history of the service: the development of life-saving technology, the role of minorities in this 19th century organization, and much more.
