Kung: Korean Archery While
the popular Korean martial arts like tae kwon do and tang soo do have
spread around the world, generations of warriors have quietly practiced
more traditional Korean Combat arts, preserving centuries old techniques
in virtual secrecy. Now, you can discover what few people outside of Korea
know-the rich tradition of Korean warrior arts like ssireum, kumdo and
archery. Each tape in this continuing series gives you a rare glimpse of
the techniques, history and philosophy of an art through the words and
actions of its masters. Korea is known throughout the world for
consistently producing gold medallists in Olympic archery. The roots of
its success lie in the traditional Korean method of archery known as Kung
Kuk. This tape explores the philosophy and history of Korean archery as
well as the exact methods used by traditional archers to achieve
perfection in this demanding art. Demonstrations by some of the greatest
archery masters in Korea illustrate the concepts of stance, grip, aim,
release, and more.
Archery
Elk: The Dream Hunt Paul Brunner, Tom Moore,
Mike Lapinski and others share with you the excitement and thrill of
bugling bull elk. They hunt in different regions of the country so it is
more familiar territory, no matter where you are going to hunt elk. I have
watched this video many times and will watch it many more in the future.

How
- to Construct the Asiatic Composite Bow Two
hours of detailed explanations. The authors explain all you need to have
your job done. Then comes the difficult part, putting it to practice, but
this video is really a help in making things easier. They start from the
preparation of the horns, wood and sinew, with useful tools you would
never think of using. Then the whole process is explained. Really a must
for those of us who cannot find the book of Klopseg and have no access to
a teacher, but are willing to make this fascinating bow.

Young: A Bowhunting LegendArt
Young and Saxton Pope show modern day bowhunters what real hunters are.
Bringing only their primitive bows, and what they could carry on their
backs, these two legends took on the Alaska wilderness of 1922. Actual
footage of their 1922 expedition shows Pope & Young hunting Moose,
Caribou, Dahl Sheep, and Grizzly Bears, all with their traditional archery
gear. In addition, this video reveals how they used tree bark to make a
Caribou call, and how they used the hide of a Moose they arrowed to make a
canoe. This video is a must see for every archery enthusiast.

October Whitetails I This
was the first bowhunting video I ever watched, and I have loved it ever
since. Even though it says release date is 1998, video predates that by 10
years. {I know because it was in 1980's that I first saw it} Don't let
that deter you, though; the quality and information are ageless. Several
deer taken on camera, including one of the most incredible running deer
instinctive shots I've ever witnessed. Honestly, an absolute must for
anyone who likes quality hunting videoes with lots of action, invaluable
information, and some good old fashioned fun.

covers topics such as powders where readers learn about the development of
black powder, pyrodex, and now even smokeless powder use in muzzleloading
weapons. And a section on bullets traces their development from rough cast
versions to today's sabots that help propel jacketed pistol bullets.
Ignition systems from flintlocks to percussion cap ignition systems are
fully explained in both text and photos. Finally, "Hunting with
Muzzleloaders" explains why this segment of the shooting sports is
growing.

January 1991) There is a storm
of controversy regarding this book. Kurt Saxon is well known survivalist
whose work is sometimes misunderstood as guide to terrorism, but in fact
the book deals with broader subjects of how to survive if civilization
collapse. The majority of the work should be required reading for people
is high risk weather areas. Very few people would know how to survive for
prolonged period without electricity or how to perserve food. With El
Nino, Asteroids, and earthquake, this book may be the most valuable book
you'll ever own.

THE
NEW WORLD OF RUSSIAN SMALL ARMS AND AMMO Under
Soviet rule, Russian small arms designers developed some of the most
innovative small arms and ammo in history: underwater weapons; weapons
that used silent ammo; whole families of rifles, pistols, shotguns and
grenade launchers of truly advanced design favored by SPETsNAZ and the
revolutionary new AN-94 assault rifle that is destined to replace the
AK-74. This book contains detailed descriptions, specs and illustrations
of the AN-94, PSS silent pistol, Bizon SMG, Saiga-12 tactical shotgun,
GP-25 grenade launcher and more.
Military
Small Arms of the 20th Century This new
edition of Ian Hoggs classic is this centurys ultimate reference work on
the subject of military small arms. It has been fully updated and expanded
(by 64 pages) to cover all small arms in military service during the 20th
century and now includes many arms listings and photographs that did not
appear in earlier editions.
The
Greenhill Military Small Arms Data This indispensable reference
gives key data for each weapon, from the introduction of the metallic
cartridge, to today's technologically advanced and wide-ranging equipment.
Length, weight, muzzle velocity, and rate of fire are listed for each
weapon, and its particular strengths and weaknesses are analyzed.
The
World's Elite Forces: Small Arms and Accessories The

the world. A companion to The World's Elite Forces: Arms and Equipment in
the Greenhill Military Manuals series, the book includes a page-long entry
for each weapon detailing the uses of the gun and the technical
innovations that make it distinctive, with a focus on the development of
specialized features like silencers or sights for sniping. Author John
Walter (The Luger Story) has also written an introduction discussing
trends in weapons design.
Small
Arms: Pistols and Rifles This handy reference guide, by the
leading small arms author, provides descriptions, technical specifications
and illustrations of 75 of the most important pistols and rifles,
including the Heckler & Koch USP/SOCOM pistols, the FN Five-seven
5.7mm pistol, the Heckler & Koch G36 rifle and much more.
Submachine
Guns This new handbook is an authoritative
guide, by a leading weapons expert, to the world's most important
submachine guns, from the Bergmann Musquete and Tommy gun of the 1920s to
the innovative modern P90 Personal Defense Weapon. Born in World War I,
the submachine gun came to maturity in World War II in the hands of
Commandos, Rangers, Panzer-Grenadiers and Soviet Tank Riders. After the
war these weapons were replaced by more efficient designs, epitomized by
the Israeli Uzi and the German MP5, but at the same time the military
adoption of short assault rifles turned the submachine gun into a weapon
for police security and counter-terrorist forces.
The
Vital Guide to Combat Guns and Infantry Weapons The only pocket-sized reference book available on the modern soldier's
weapons. From handguns for self-protection combat rifles, machine-guns,
and missiles, this unique volume includes weapons now used by police
forces at airports along with firearms used by the SAS and other special
forces. Sections include: pistols, combat rifles, sub-machine guns,
machine guns and infantry missiles.
Modern

addition to the Greenhill Military Manuals series is a concise guide to

length, weight, feed, rate of fire, and muzzle velocity of every weapon.
The book covers machine-guns and variants manufactured in more than thirty
countries, including Britain, the USA, Germany, Russia, Yugoslavia, China,
Italy, Israel and Czechoslovakia.
Ammunition
: Grenades and Projectile Munitions Concise
guide to modern ammunition.& Detailed specifications and
illustrations.& International coverage A rifle without ammunition is
an expensive club, an artillery piece without shells, a futuristic
sculpture. To fully understand weapons, one must understand ammunition.
Some types have remained basically unchanged for more than a century,
while others change radically as new technology develops or new types of
targets present themselves. This latest in the popular Military Manual
series examines everything from simple rifle cartridges to highly complex
"smart" projectiles, from grenades and mortar bombs to cannon
and tank ammunition.
The
Gun Digest Book of Assault Weapons This is the
latest word on true assault weaponry in use today by international
military and law enforcement organizations. The authors report on the
changing mission of these weapons and then test many of them during the
preparation of exclusive performance reports. Coverage includes countries
such as the U.S., Germany, Israel, Russia and South Africa.

Submachine Gun, Machine Pistol, And Shotgun : A Hands-On Evaluation The
third in T.J. Mullin's war weapons series is on semiautomatic machine
guns, machine pistols and shotguns, perhaps the least understood of
individual weapons. He tests more than 50 battle-scarred weapons from
North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East and tells you which ones
you can count on (an which ones you can't) and why.
Modern
Beretta Firearms Gangarossa presents very useful information in
detail about the firm and the excellent firearms the firm produces,
including the famed Beretta 92FS, other Beretta pistols, shotguns, rifles
and even machineguns. Rather than simply listing their characteristics,
Gangarossa explains their design origins, their development history and
their military, police and commercial uses in great detail. He also
provides his view of the successes and failures of Beretta's arms.

Firearm Ballistics
The
M16/AR15 Rifle Whether a shooter or collector,
inside the cover of this third book in the "Shooter's and Collector's
Guide" series is a minutely detailed history of Eugene Stoner's AR15
and M16 rifles. The development of the M16 rifle is traced from the
adoption of the first American-made flintlock musket in 1798 through
Vietnam and the Gulf War to the present to show how the history of the
country's military requirements molded the need for a small caliber, large
magazine capacity, select fire rifle. If you are interested in the history
of this fine battle rifle, or in tactical, bench rest, service rifle
competition, or in just every day fun plinking, then this book will
provide all the information you need to select, maintain, shoot and keep
in good repair any AR15 rifle.
Complete
AR-15/M16 Sourcebook What Every Shooter Needs to Know. This
carefully researched revised and updated edition of The Complete AR-15/M16
Sourcebook offers fresh insight into why the AR-15/M16 rifle remains a
favorite of soldiers, law enforcement officials, civilian shooters and
self-defense experts. In it, Duncan Long takes another look at the history
of the "black-rifle" from the bureaucratic blunders and military
infighting that ruined its reliability during the Vietnam War to the
modifications that transformed it into the most reliable weapon in the
world. He also examines the many military and custom spinoffs of the
firearm, including an invaluable listing of its various models,
supplemented by an impressive collection of photos and illustrations. In
addition, he covers grenade launchers, SAW versions, and experimental
weapons systems and even gives a detailed assessment of the OICW and other
firearms now being tested as replacements for the U.S. military's M16 and
M4 carbine. An entire section of the book is devoted to the very newest
accessories for the AR-15, with a hard look at which ones will enhance its
capabilities-and which could get the shooter killed. In addition to
offering advice on improving an AR-15 rifle, picking the best ammunition
for it, and ensuring its reliability, Long presents simple techniques for
creating a one-of-a-kind exotic weapon built around this rifle through the
selection of parts and accessories now on the market (and where to get
them). Finally, the book provides complete instructions on how to
field-strip, detail strip, troubleshoot, and assemble an AR-15. Whether
you want a weapon you can rely on to get you out of a tight spot or wish
to build a super accurate target version of the AR-15, this is the most
complete and up-to-date resource available on what many consider to be the
best rifle ever made.
AR-15/M16
: A Practical Guide Here is the definitive
book on the rifle that has been the inspiration for so many modern assault
rifle designs. Invaluable to the M16 owner, it includes info on grenade
launchers, assembly/disassembly, conversion kits and modifications,
troubleshooting, ballistics and ammunition, combat use, testing, cleaning
and lubrication. Also includes detailed step-by-step instructions and
materials lists for the do-it-yourselfer.
The
M14-Type Rifles The M14 was the last large
caliber rifle adopted by the U.S. military. It was derived from, and
replaced the M1 Garand of World War II and Korean War fame. It in turn was
replaced by the 5.56 mm M16 in the early stages of the War in Vietnam.
Although the M14 lasted less then 10 years as the military service rifle,
its effect was overwhelming in civilian and military match target shooting
for thirty year, especially at ranges exceeding 600 yards, and in the
development of military and paramilitary sniper rifles. The book provides
a history of the development of the civilian version of the M14 and the
civilian version, the M1A,by its various manufacturers, including those in
both Chinas. A chapter is given over to accurizing the M1A rifle for
"do-it-yourselfers and for custom rifle smiths and the U.S. Army's
National Match Specifications and building techniques are listed.
Ammunition selection and preparation for match shooting and shooting
techniques and positions are detailed. The book is heavily illustrated
with photographs and line drawings. Also included are a list of
manufacturers, parts and accessory suppliers and custom rifle smiths
capable of building less than 1 minute of angle rifles.

The
Official Soviet AKM Manual This military
manual was originally issued by the Soviet Ministry of Defense for the AKM
assault rifle and its folding-stock twin, the AKMS. It covers the history,
function, maintenance, assembly and disassembly, confirmation zero,
penetration characteristics of various cartridges, trajectory and
dispersion patterns, accessories and much more.
Legends
and Reality of the AK A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the History,
Design, and Impact of the Kalashnikov Family of Weapons. There
are many excellent books about the AK. What makes Legends and Reality of
the AK-47 different from all the other AK books? It is co-written by a
very close associate of designer Mikhail Kalashnikov at the Izhmash Arms
Factory and one of America's most respected military small-arms experts.
Because of Valery Shilin's close ties to both the designer and the
factory, the authors were able to gain access to information, photos and
weapons never before seen in public, including the AKB and AKB-1 assault
rifles, the mysterious A-62 and the very latest prototypes of the AK's
replacement, the AN-94. They fill in the gaps in the knowledge about the
history and development of not only the Kalashnikov family of weapons but
of other Russian small arms as well. Most important, as a friend and
colleague, Shilin adds a personal perspective on the man behind the design
of some of the most legendary weapons of the 20th century.
Kalashnikov
This volume examines one of the outstanding successes in small-arms
history. From the first gun designed by a convalescing Red Army sergeant
in 1941, to mass production and use by a vast number of armed forces
throughout the world, this is the complete story. The prototype was
developed into the AK-47 by 1949, and by the 1950s the Kalashnikov had
achieved runaway success based on simplicity and reliability. A superbly
illustrated directory.
The
Official Soviet SVD Manual This translation of
the official Soviet SVD manual contains operating instructions for the
7.62mm snayperskaya vintovka Dragunov - the SVD. Designed by noted
firearms designer Evgeniy Fedorovich Dragunov to operate under the most
extreme climactic and combat situations, the SVD was the first Russian
rifle designed from scratch specifically for sniping. It was accepted into
the Soviet armory in 1963 and has been copied by the Chinese, Bulgarian,
Romanian and Yugoslavian militaries. Learn to operate the lightweight,
extremely reliable and easily maintained SVD as the master Dragunov
himself intended and as it has been taught to hundreds of thousands of
Russian soldiers. Topics include purpose and combat characteristics of
combat rifles; basic components and their functions during firing;
assembly and disassembly; construction of components, mechanisms,
accessories and cartridges; stoppages during firing and how to correct
them; maintenance and storage; inspection and preparation for firing;
confirmation of zero and how to bring it back to normal zero and more.

Anti-Aircraft
Artillery Anti-Aircraft
Artillery tells of the development and operational use of this weapon from
its inception as an anti-balloon defense at the end of the nineteenth
century to the present. Covering weapons of all the major armies and
providing an engrossing overview of the use, development and effectiveness
of the anti-aircraft gun, this is an ideal and concise history of a
fascinating weapon.
The
Field Artillery: History and Sourcebook Focusing
on artillery used on the battlefield rather than garrison, coast,
antitank, and antiaircraft artillery, provides a an overview of the
history through artillery's four revolutions from 1346 to the Gulf War,
bibliographic essays covering the same period, biographical profiles of
important people, a chronology, several appendices, and a glossary without
pronunciation.
Twentieth-Century
Artillery Future
military historians will surely look back upon the 20th century and say,
"There was the zenith of artillery." Though it retains its
importance on the battlefield, for sheer diversity of type and
multiplicity of design, for size, numbers, and tactical influence, the
likes of artillery as it stood in 1945 will never again be seen. Beginning
with the guns that pounded the trenches in World War I, and the giant
calibers of "Big Bertha," "Schalnke Emma," and the
Paris gun, go through the century's most important hand-held and anti-tank
devices, anti-aircraft guns, and World War II field pieces right up to the
latest tactical and strategic missiles.

Bradley:
A History of American Fighting and Support Vehicles by
R. P. Hunnicutt (Hardcover - September 1999) Bradley covers the
development and use of full-tracked, nontank fighting and support
vehicles.
Sheridan:
A History of the American Light Tank by R.
P. Hunnicutt (Hardcover - September 1995) The
first volume, A History of the American Light Tank, documents the
development of light armored vehicles from their early beginning in WWI to
the end of WWII. This second volume traces not only the development of the
light tank, but also its transition from a lightly armored vehicle
supporting infantry to its current in extremis role for the Army's early
entry forces. The centerpiece is the M551, General Sheridan, armored
reconnaissance/airborne assault vehicle--a 16-ton tank that could swim,
fire missile and caseless conventional ammunition from the same stabilized
gun-launcher system, and be delivered to the combat area by parachute.
Profusely illustrated, mostly in b&w, with some color.
Achtung-Panzer:
The Development of Tank Warfare (Cmp) by Heinz Guderian, Christopher Duffy (Translator) (Paperback - May
2000) List A
rare, enlightening account by an outstanding soldier reveals his thoughts
and theories on armored warfare and motorized land battle--which he then
put in action to devastating effect during World War Two. Guderian's
treatise on the importance of tank development, and on modern mechanized
technology, shows exactly why the Germans dominated land warfare in the
early stage of the fighting. 53 b/w illus.,
Camp
Colt to Desert Storm: The History of U.S. Armored Forces
by George F. Hofmann (Introduction), Donn A. Starry (Introduction) (Hardcover
- September 1999) No comprehensive account of
U.S. armor doctrine, technology and practice has ever been written. This
anthology takes a long step toward filling that gap. University of
Cincinnati history professor Hoffmann (The Super Sixth) and retired
general Starry (Mounted Combat in Vietnam) outline the synergies among
political, operational and material factors that shape American approaches
to the tank in battle. While the contributors all uphold high intellectual
standards, the work would have been improved by a stronger defining
concept and firmer editorial control. The Korean War is given almost as
much text space as the WWII European theater. The chapters on the Patton,
Abrams and Bradley systems focus on design and procurement in mind-numbing
administrative detail. These, however, are minor problems in a book that
boasts some of the best available analyses of mobile war as practiced by
the U.S. At the top of the list is Christopher Gabel's essay on WWII armor
operations in Europe, a model for its balanced evaluation of American
strengths and weaknesses. Stephen Borque's analysis of armor in Desert
Storm is also a masterful operational narrative. In back-to-back chapters,
Dale Wilson and Tim Nenninger combine for an overview of American armor
from 1917 to 1939. A definitive chronicle in one voice remains to be
written, but this edited collection will stand as a valuable resource for
military historians.
Marines
Under Armor: The Marine Corps and the Armored Fighting Vehicle, 1916-2000
by Kenneth W. Estes (Hardcover - October 2000) In
this story of men, machines and missions, Kenneth Estes tells how the U.S.
Marine Corps came to acquire the armored fighting vehicle and what it
tried to do with it. The longtime Marine tank officer and noted military
historian offers an insider's view of the Corps's acquisition and use of
armored fighting vehicles over the course of several generations, a view
that illustrates the characteristics of the Corps as a military
institution and of the men who have guided its development. His book
examines the planning, acquisition, and employment of tanks, amphibian
tractors, and armored cars and explores the ideas that led to the fielding
of these weapons systems along with the doctrines and tactics intended for
them, and their actual use in combat.
Rapid
Fire: The Development of Automatic Cannon, Heavy Machine Guns and Their
Ammunition for Armies, Navies and Air Forces
by Anthony G. Williams (Hardcover) This book is a very well
written history of large caliber automatic weapons. It gives a good
coverage of the mechanisms and characteristics of the weapons, but it's
real importance to me is it's well illustrated gallery of the rounds used
in the weapons, complete with specifications of the rounds and the weapon
and country using them, something that is rare to find in other works. In a
library of over 1000 volumes on weaponry, this is one of the most used

national and international security.
Tank:
The Progress of a Monstrous War Machine by
Patrick Wright (Hardcover - April 2002) In Tank, Patrick Wright offers an
entertaining, insightful, even meditative account of this emblematic
vehicle. A brilliant work of military history, this book also explores
the tank as a social and cultural object. The author interweaves classic
armored campaigns such as the blitzkrieg and Desert Storm with the
stunning political impact of tanks in the streets of Prague in 1968 and
in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He also explores how the tank became the
symbol of technological futurism and unstoppable progress, as well as of
totalitarian oppression

STOPPING
POWER: A PRACTICAL ANALYSIS Evan
Marshall and Ed Sanow rocked the firearms world with the release of
Handgun Stopping Power and Street Stoppers. Both books predicted the
effectiveness of all types of ammunition by studying the results of
real-life shootings rather than relying on laboratory tests that ignored
the dynamics of an actual gunfight. This third book in the series provides
the very latest street results of all the major handgun calibers, from .22
LR to .45 ACP, as well as popular rifle and shotgun loads. It also
contains chapters on short-barrel ballistics, the emergence of the hot new
.357 SIG caliber, the continued success of the .40 S&W, the
development of the latest exotic ammo, the effectiveness of black powder
firearms and a brand-new ammo test protocol based on the results of the
many gunfights of U.S. Border Patrol officers.

Handgunner's
Guide Including The Art Of The Quick Draw
And Combat Shooting. In his day, Chic Gaylord was
the "top gun" in the world of combat shooting, enjoying a
reputation as one of the fastest and most accurate shooters around. This
Paladin collector's edition of Handgunner's Guide is a faithful
reproduction of his 1960 classic that revolutionized the holster industry
(even today Gaylord is considered the premiere designer of modern
concealment holsters) and, to a great extent, changed the way we view
tactics and techniques to survive and win a gunfight. Although some of the
weapons discussed in this book are no longer available, a surprising
amount of the information is still as tactically sound and relevant today
as it was 40 years ago when used by a wide variety of U.S. federal and
local law enforcement agencies and several European and Latin American
countries to train their elite shooters. This release is intended to
provide an accurate account of Chic Gaylord's genius and his craft and to
perpetuate it for new generations of shooters.

The
Advanced Pistol Marksmanship Manual The
Advanced Pistol Marksmanship Manual has been compiled with a determination
to improve pistol marksmanship. It is a compilation of data gathered from
many years of personal experience of proven U. S. Army Pistol Champions
and coaches condensed into a ready reference and covering the most
advanced and proven techniques known to date. The marksmen and coaches who
contributed ideas gained from championship competitive experience did so
with a firm desire to impart the knowledge gained for the promotion of
pistol marksmanship training. The data represents a comprehensive effort
covering many facets of pistol marksmanship and related subjects gained
from the research of authoritative articles, personal interviews,
observation of foreign competition and contributions closely associated
with pistol activities.
The
Advanced Pistol Marksmanship: Instructor's Manual
It is difficult, if not
impossible, to establish a universal system of training in pistol
marksmanship which will cover all cases - one that can be adapted to each
shooter’s technique or special need. Training pistol shooters requires
an individual approach. There is no single pattern or system for the
organization of training that will entirely meet the individual
requirements of all competitors, nor can one ever be expected. This is the
reason knowledgeable coaches take the peculiarities of an individual -
such as experience, degree of preparation and fitness, and other items -
into account. They use these, and by relying on their own experience,
devise a training program which allows special consideration for each
shooter’s capabilities. In spite of the difference in details, technique
or method, there is much that is common to the training of advanced
marksmen, that - in the opinion of leading coaches and shooters, applies
to everyone, without exception. This manual endeavors to present, in a
detailed, comprehensive manner, these universal applications.

quality requires exquisite craftsmanship and extreme patience, which
results in unparalleled balance, responsiveness, and handling. This book
is a study of appreciation for the leading game guns of yesterday and
today, including the Parkers, Foxes, L.C. Smiths, and Lefevers of
America’s golden age of gunmaking, and the Purdeys, Holland &
Hollands, Piottis, Garbis, and other fine doubles still being made in
Europe. Essential easy-to-understand instructions provide readers a
working knowledge for creating game guns, from making stocks and barrels
to the finishing touches of engraving, checkering, and gun fit. The

The
Farnam Method of Defensive Shotgun The Farnam
Method of Defensive Shotgun and Rifle Shooting is filled with vital,
gritty - yet seldom discussed - facts as only Farnam can present them.
This is no comic-book kiddy text or coffee-table fluff. If you want to be
a competent and knowledgeable defensive shotgun or rifle owner, this book
belongs on your bookshelf! The Farnam Method of Defensive Shotgun and
Rifle Shooting is the first book of its kind which explains the details of
the defensive use of the shotgun and rifle and shows you exactly how each
critical goal is achieved.
The
Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy The book
focuses almost completely on the sport of bench rest shooting, with very
little on anything else- such as accurate rifles for hunting, varminting
and sniping. If you are a newby to benchrest then this is highly
recommended- no mistake. If however, you are a dyed in the wool varminter,
or use a tactical rifle for work, then you will not learn a huge amount.

The
Art of Shooting With the Rifle Knowing how to
handle a long arm at the end of the nineteenth century was considered an
art. This facsimile edition of the 1888 book by a respected rifleman
provides a wealth of detailed information on the subject. Topics covered
include prone and standing positions, long range and elevation, wind
allowance, the back position, sights, match rifles, temperature and
atmosphere, tables of angles, trajectories, rifling, cleaning, and game
shooting.
Cowboy
Action Silhouette Rifle After watching single-action
revolver aficionados turn Cowboy Action Shooting into one of the most
popular shooting sports in America, riflemen began to bring their
iron-sight hunting and plinking rifles to the silhouette ranges. Their
impromptu matches caught on quickly, and the National Rifle Association
has now officially sanctioned the sport of Cowboy Action Silhouette Rifle.
Author Charles Stephens (Cowboy Action Pistol Shooting and How to Become a
Master Handgunner) explains the rules and describes the guns used in this
new sport. He also includes tips on how to tune your equipment to achieve
top performance and how to make simple modifications to your rifle to
customize it for your own style of shooting. Most importantly, Stephens
explains with detailed instructions and clear photos the rifle
marksmanship basics for the 21st century.

Psychological
Science
of Coercion: Communication Research and Psychological Warfare 1945-1960 Provides
the first thorough examination of the role of the CIA, the Pentagon, and
other US security agencies in the evolution of modern communication
research, a field in the social sciences which crystallized into a
distinct discipline in the early 1950s. Government-funded psychological
warfare programs underwrote the academic triumph of preconceptions about
communication that persist today in communication studies, advertising
research, and in counterinsurgency operations. Christopher Simpson
contends that it is unlikely that communication research could have
emerged into its present form without regular transfusions of money from
U.S military, intelligence, and propaganda agencies during the Cold War. A
fascinating case study in the history of science and the sociology of
knowledge, Science of Coercion offers valuable insights into the dynamics
of ideology and the social psychology of communication.
Psywarriors:
Psychological Warfare During the Korean War A not so
secret weapon, PSYWAR (psychological warfare), was added to the United
States Air Force's arsenal during the Korean War. A unit was created to
design propaganda projectiles, determine targets, and suggest the means to
deliver them to the enemy. It was a strategic effort aimed not at the
North Korean troops in the field, but at the real enemy, the Soviet Union.
This account reveals the men selected to man this force, the way they were
trained, and how they performed. This "war of words" was at
times effective, occasionally frustrating, always dedicated, and even
humorous when it was better to laugh than to complain. It was a battle of
brains not bullets, and the victory may have been won many years later.
Psychological
Effects of U.S. Air Operations in Four Wars 1941-1991: Lessons for U.S.
Commanders The psychological effects of air operations can significantly shorten wars and
reduce their costs, particularly in American lives. In some conflicts, the
psychological effects of air operations may exceed the physical effects in
importance. This report examines ways to maximize the psychological impact
of U.S. air power in future conflicts. Drawing upon POW interrogations and
other data from the Persian Gulf, Vietnam, and Korean wars and World War
II, the author assesses the psychological effects of past U.S. air attacks
against both enemy strategic targets and deployed ground forces. The
author identifies the conditions that have consistently produced a
catastrophic disintegration in enemy resistance and large-scale enemy
surrenders and suggests how U.S. commanders might design and conduct
future military operations to exploit the psychological potential of air
power more fully.
U.S.
Army Special Warfare, Its Origins: Psychological and Unconventional
Warfare, 1941-1952
Psychological
Operations and Political Warfare in Long-term Strategic Planning The
eight previously unpublished papers focus on the hostile actions of the
Soviet Union against the West in the form of psychological operations,
power politics, and blackmail. The contributors explore psychological
operations in the United States, Poland, West Germany, France, and Latin
America; examine the most effective measures the United States and its
allies can take to counteract these measures; and analyze the background
of East European resistance to Soviet dominance and the subsequent Soviet
countermeasurers.
Propaganda:
The Formation of Men's Attitudes
Published in 1965, this book is a
significant, if creepy study of that oft-misunderstood concept of
propaganda. The references are unfortunately dated, but the insights are
valuable, especially given how much propaganda is ignored in American
society, particularly. It's not an easy read by any means, mostly because
he throws so much at you at once you're sort of left punch-drunk. He lays
it all out forthrightly. The most terrible revelation he offers is when he
points out that the most informed individuals (in the sense of consuming
the most media) are the most propagandized (but unaware of being so). This
is why this book doesn't get more play -- it would put the Massive Media
and the "public relations" (aka, propaganda industry) out of
business if people understood their real social role. The book is bleak,
and leaves you reeling. But it does provide intellectual ammunition --
namely, critical thinking -- as a hopeful vaccination from propaganda,
except for Ellul's statement that people who think propaganda doesn't
affect them tend to be propagandized....
The
Manipulated Mind: Brainwashing, Conditioning and Indoctrination
Research
findings from psychology show that brainwashing is not a special
subversive technique; it is the clever manipulation of unrealized
influences that operate in all our lives. This
book, by breaking down so-called brainwashing to its individual elements,
shows how social conditioning, need for approval, emotional dependency and
much else that we are unaware of, prevent us from being as self-directed
as we think; and, conversely, which human traits make us the least
susceptible to subtle influence.
Age
of Propaganda: The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion Drawing
on the history of propaganda and modern research in social psychology,
this book reveals mass persuasion in action -- not just the tactics, but
why they work so well, and how we can protect ourselves from manipulation.
Battle
for the Mind: A Physiology of Conversion and Brainwashing
How can an evangelist convert a hardboiled sophisticate? Why does a POW sign a
"confession" that he knows is false? How is a criminal pressured
into admitting his guilt? Do the evangelist, the POW's captor, and the
policeman use similar methods to gain their ends? These and other
compelling questions are discussed in the definitive work by William
Sargant, who for many years until his death in 1988 was a leading
physician in psychological medicine. Sargant spells out and illustrates
the basic techniques used by evangelists, psychiatrists, and brain-washers
to disperse the patterns of belief and behavior already established in the
minds of their hearers, and to substitute new patterns for them.
Mind
Control, World Control In this book, Jim Keith outlines the history of the New World Order, from
H. G. Wells' "fictional" accounts, to Cecil Rhodes, to the
Rockefellers, the Nazis, communists, freemasons, the Illuminati, and the
Council of Foreign Relations. He then explains how the New World Order
elites (bankrolled by Rockefeller foundation grants) have been able to
take control over the psychiatric establishment and set up various
institutes (the Tavistock institute) to create methods of mind control and
"societry". As Jim Keith says, "And now you know why
shrinks look so weird and often have nervous tics. They have been taught
that they do not have a soul." Ha! He examines the CIA's role in the
implementation of these mind control techniques, in the form of MK-ULTRA,
in the alleged creation of cults, in the creation of assassins, in the
direct implantation of mind control transceivers (pioneered by the Yale
psychiatrist Dr. Jose Delgado) in the brains of innocent victims, in the
use of "death rays" (e.g. HAARP), and through the projects
MONARCH and RHIC-EDOM. Much that he says is mere guess work. And, many of
the "victims" of mind control are obviously schizophrenics.
However, should a single one of these instances be confirmed that is one
instance too many. Whatever part of this book you choose to believe, you
simply cannot deny that mind control experiments exist/have existed. This
much is fact. They have been implemented on the general populace. Jim
Keith does a good job of pointing out those cases that appear to be
nothing more than hoaxes or the product of delusional minds. However,
beneath it all is the presence of a powerful elite trying to implement
mind control technologies and using unwitting victims as guinea pigs.
Seeds
of Victory: Psychological Warfare & Propaganda Psychological
Warfare is by no means a new concept in warfare. To the layman however,
this particular aspect of armed conflict has seldom been greeted with
understanding, or even acknowledgment. Accordingly, not enough has been
broadly or factually disseminated upon the subject to date. Seeds of
Victory explores in detail the component mechanics of an intensely
orchestrated Psychological Warfare campaign, while utilizing the most
recent formant of the Persian Gulf War as a case in point for
understanding. The tremendous scale of the Persian Gulf War's
Psychological Warfare campaign is evidenced by the fact that long before
Coalition soldiers fired the first shots in that conflict a different
class of army had already been assembled for months and was fiercely
locked in a pitched battle for dominance over Saddam Hussein's citizens
and soldiers alike. Far away from blaring headlines and flashy newscasts,
violent, graphic images of warfare, civil unrest, starvation, disease, and
death were systematically bombarding Saddam Hussein's Empire in wave upon
wave of leaflet and radio assaults. That provocative campaign of
psychological attrition and dominance is documented within this text
through personal interviews with some of the commanders and soldiers who
orchestrated and executed that campaign. Their experiences will accompany
the reader from the earliest planning and developmental stages, through
the production and into the final dissemination phases of demoralization.
Psychological
Warfare and Propaganda: Irgun Documentation
Psychological
Warfare Dr. Linebarger was one of the world's experts on understanding the
relationship of culture to propaganda. This book was in use for many years
as the textbook in the US Army course on Psychological Operations. It is
still just as useful towards understanding the political 'spin' machines
as it was in planning some of the most successful psychological warfare
campaigns of the last forty years.
A
Psychological Warfare Casebook At first glance, this
book would seem outdated. It was first published in the 1950's under
contract to the US Army and has the look of a cold war army manual.
Originally printed in two volumes, the 1979 version's size and density are
also daunting. However, the book is a product of the early cold war
collaboration between the military and academia (notably, Morris Janowitz
is a contributing editor). It makes a serious scholarly attempt to examine
the practical use of propaganda in warfare. The result is a well organized
and expansive collection of case studies

STOPPING
POWER: A PRACTICAL ANALYSIS Evan Marshall and Ed Sanow rocked the firearms world
with the release of Handgun Stopping Power and Street Stoppers. Both books
predicted the effectiveness of all types of ammunition by studying the
results of real-life shootings rather than relying on laboratory tests
that ignored the dynamics of an actual gunfight. This third book in the
series provides the very latest street results of all the major handgun
calibers, from .22 LR to .45 ACP, as well as popular rifle and shotgun
loads. It also contains chapters on short-barrel ballistics, the emergence
of the hot new .357 SIG caliber, the continued success of the .40 S&W,
the development of the latest exotic ammo, the effectiveness of black
powder firearms and a brand-new ammo test protocol based on the results of
the many gunfights of U.S. Border Patrol officers.
Metallic
Cartridge Conversions Once again history repeats itself with the skyrocketing popularity of metallic
cartridge conversion revolvers among cowboy action shooting enthusiasts.
These revolvers are almost as popular as when they were first introduced
in the 19th century. Collectors and enthusiasts
will track the history of the original conversions of the 1800s through
historic text and both new and archival photographs. All current modern
reproductions are represented with photos, technical details, and
performance test results. In-depth coverage of the original revolvers
includes models from Colt, Remington, Smith & Wesson, Rollin White,
Richards, and Richards-Mason. Modern guns from American Western Arms, Navy
Arms, and Cimarron F.A. Co. are highlighted.

of the barrel. Enter Tony M. Noblitt and Warren Garbilska's Dead On: The
Long-Range Marksman's Guide to Extreme Accuracy. This hands-on manual
walks the shooter through every step required to become a true long-range
marksman, from understanding minute-of-angle principles and selecting a
rifle, caliber, and cartridge to mounting and zeroing a scope, estimating
wind values, dealing with mirage, understanding bore sighting, selecting
and using iron sights, shooting with a variety of slings, performing
preventive maintenance on your rifle and using range finders. Also
included is an extensive series of scope adjustment charts for a long list
of rounds.

veteran Gabe Suarez teaches you the most vital lessons and techniques for
prevailing in any situation where you must draw your weapon. Chapters

Tactical
Rifle : The Precision Tool In
a highly publicized February 1997 shootout, two rifle-wielding thugs
managed to outgun LAPD officers armed only with handguns after a botched
North Hollywood bank robbery. It was not until responding SWAT officers
armed with rifles arrived on the scene that the suspects were finally
neutralized, but not without police casualties. Though not the first
incidence of police officers being outmatched by criminals' superior
firepower, this one was pivotal in bringing about a serious re-examination
of the use of the rifle for urban law enforcement. In this book, Gabriel
Suarez, founder and senior tactical instructor of his department's
Tactical Rifle Team, exposes the myths that have long kept the rifle from
being considered for use in urban policing. In addition, he details the
many advantages the rifle affords the inner city police officer or SWAT
operator in a wide range of deployment situations and presents innovative
techniques that are replacing the "traditional" ones among
agencies that have adopted the rifle. As we progress into the 21st
century, the rifle is likely to become an increasingly integral part of
the police officer's tool bag. This book will serve as a valuable guide to
police tactical riflemen, making their jobs easier and safer as they make
the criminal's job more difficult and hazardous.
Sound
Doctrine: A Tactical Primer Unlike most tactical books, which teach tactics as a "skill
set", this book emphasizes an intuitive application of fundamental
principles. These principles have evolved over centuries of tactical
operations and form a body of "sound doctrine". Heal not only
presents a distillation of the more than ninety tactical texts, but
provides an insightful and compelling call for rethinking tactics of law
enforcement. Assuming no prior experience or understanding of tactical
matters, Heal draws from everyday life such as competitive games, driving,
or planning a vacation to show how to reconceptualize a difficult
situation. Because the fundamental concepts Heal explores apply to all
types of emergencies, Sound Doctrine is suitable for not only law
enforcement, but firefighters, private security, and other emergency
responders.
Raids:
A Tactical Guide This is a must have book for any tactical officer. Author Lonsdale
presents a comprehensive look at the training and tactics involved in high
risk warrant service. More than just a SERT manual however, this book
should also be standard training for every police officer. I started my
tactical training under Lonsdale and after 6 schools, I would have to say
his was the best. I use the tactics I learned from Mark when performing
ordinary police work. Regardless of your experience, I believe you'll find
the book informative.
Surgical
Speed Shooting Andy Stanford concisely and
comprehensively gives the reader the tools to understand and adopt Modern
Isosceles shooting technique. Instructions are clear and very detailed
regarding grip, stance, aiming, trigger control, and follow through (all
of these topics justifiably warranting their own chapters). Stanford
provides a comparison of Weaver and Modern Iso. Gunhandling
(administrative and tactical) skills are discussed with the focus on the
self-loader (Glock is the predominant pistol pictured), while wheelgun
skills are, happily, not left out. Presentation and ready positions are
also described well. I found it interesting that he has a entire chapter
devoted to one-handed shooting technique -- a valid topic since we're
talking about combat pistol shooting.

Modern
Strategy The book offers a uniquely comprehensive analysis
of the different facets of modern strategy. The classic writings of Carl
von Clausewitz are reconsidered for their continuing relevance, while
possible successors are appraised. In addition to arguing that Clausewitz
figured out what strategy was, and how it worked, the book probes deeply
into strategy's political, ethical, and cultural dimension. The book
explains how strategic behavior in the twentieth century has expanded from
the two-dimensional world of the land and the surface of the sea, to
include the ocean depths, the air, space, and most recently the
'cyberspace' environments. It also offers details analyses both of nuclear
matters and of the realm of irregular violence.
Fighting

been tested in countless struggles worldwide. It is a no-nonsense

One
Hundred Unorthodox Strategies One Hundred Unorthodox
Strategies was compiled in the fifteenth century, during the Ming Dynasty,
as a handbook of tactics based on Chinese military classics. Translated
into English for the first time, this unique work draws on over two
thousand years of experience in warfare to present a distillation of one
hundred key strategic principles. Originally prepared as a text for
students aspiring to high political positions in Confucian China, One
Hundred Unorthodox Strategies is a compendium of Oriental strategies
concisely stated and each individually illustrated with a description of
battle from Chinese history. These historical examples shed new light on
the often enigmatic formulations of the ancient strategists on subjects
such as Strategic Power, Defense, Vacuity, Spirit, and Victory. Acclaimed
translator and Chinese military specialist Ralph Sawyer adds his own
thoughtful commentary, deepening the reader's understanding of the
intricacies of Chinese strategic thought.
Strategy
This
is the classic book on war as we know it. During his long life, Basil H.
Liddell Hart was considered one of the world's foremost military
thinkers--a man generally regarded as the "Clausewitz of the 20th
century."
The
Art of War The Art of War is the
Swiss army knife of military theory--pop out a different tool for any
situation. Folded into this small package are compact views on
resourcefulness, momentum, cunning, the profit motive, flexibility,
integrity, secrecy, speed, positioning, surprise, deception, manipulation,
responsibility, and practicality. Thomas Cleary's translation keeps the
package tight, with crisp language and short sections. Commentaries from
the Chinese tradition trail Sun-tzu's words, elaborating and picking up on
puzzling lines. Take the solitary passage: "Do not eat food for their
soldiers." Elsewhere, Sun-tzu has told us to plunder the enemy's
stores, but now we're not supposed to eat the food? The Tang dynasty
commentator Du Mu solves the puzzle nicely, "If the enemy suddenly
abandons their food supplies, they should be tested first before eating,
lest they be poisoned." Most passages, however, are the pinnacle of
succinct clarity: "Lure them in with the prospect of gain, take them
by confusion" or "Invincibility is in oneself, vulnerability is
in the opponent." Sun-tzu's maxims are widely applicable beyond the
military because they speak directly to the exigencies of survival. Your
new tools will serve you well, but don't flaunt them. Remember Sun-tzu's
advice: "Though effective, appear to be ineffective."
Makers
of Modern Strategy Makers of Modern
Strategy , first published in 1943, deserved and demanded updating. The 28
essays in the new volume7 more than in the original range from excellent
to outstanding. They reflect the skills of a cross-section of leading
military historians. But reviving a classic is a difficult task. Some
original contributions were discarded, some rewritten, some left virtually
in tact. Old and new frequently coexist awkwardly, as when Hajo Holbom and
Gunther Rothenberg compete for 19th- century Germany. The editors'
reluctance to impose a common format add ed to an intellectual diffusion
most visible in a split between biographic and thematic approaches. As a
result, this revision cannot equal its predecessor's status as a standard
text. As an anthology, however, the work is brilliantly successful and
that is no mean achievement.
Drive
to Survive! In
the last 15 years, new crimes have littered the headlines and nightly news
with terms like drive-by shooting, carjacking, and "road rage."
In this new book, combat veteran, self-defense expert, and two-time
national SCCA auto racing champion Curt Rich offers an arsenal of
defensive combat survival and race-car driving techniques applicable to
everyday motorists who are increasingly finding themselves in
life-threatening situations. What should the driver do if he or she is
being followed, harassed, shot at, carjacked, or kidnapped? How can the
motorist maximize braking, corner quickly, and use his or her car as a
weapon? Also explained are evasive driving techniques like the bootlegger
hairpin, J-turns, and running an assailant off the road. Fifty
black-and-white illustrations detail the tactics described.
The
Evolution of Rifle Tactics "Why
didn’t soldiers take cover?" Answers a question most often asked of
living history interpreters. Explains why it took 65 years for tactics to
catch up with Claude Minie’s invention of the military rifle.
SWAT
Battle Tactics This book teaches police departments,
paramilitary units or security companies how to organize a SWAT team that
can react decisively to any crisis. Learn how to recruit, train and equip
for urban or rural warfare; master hand-to-hand combat; adapt infantry
tactics to civilian tasks; and much more.
Tactical
Reality : An Uncommon Look At Common-Sense Firearms Training And
Tactics. Louis Awerbuck is one of
America's premier firearms trainers and instructors. He firmly believes
that training and tactics are the most crucial elements in determining how
people respond in a real fight. This book brings together a decade of
articles by Awerbuck in S.W.A.T. and Soldier of Fortune magazines on
subjects ranging from creative target systems and firearms marksmanship
under stress to defensive survival of a deadly-force encounter. But above
all the book is intended to promote thought on surviving a fight in an
increasingly deteriorating society. Tactical Reality is not for the person
who looks for trouble where he could have avoided it. It is not for the
man who shuns cover and takes an unnecessary bullet. It is not for the
squeamish or anyone who isn't prepared to fight to defend himself or his
family. It is for everyone interested in finding out how to take a
realistic approach to training so that, if need be, he can turn the
tactical odds in a gunfight in his favor. This book proves that you are
what you practice.

Fight
At Night : Tools, Techniques, Tactics, And Training For Combat In Low
Light And Darkness Today the armed
professional or private citizen facing a lethal opponent in the dark has a
much greater range of options. In this book, champion practical shooter
and self-defense expert Andy Stanford shows you how to turn the darkness
from a liability to an advantage, arming you with the knowledge and
techniques you need to prevail in any low-light conflict. From relatively
simple hand-held flashlights, light mounts and spotlights to laser aimers,
tritium sights and optical sights to the very latest high-tech night
vision systems, Stanford gives you the low-down on the selection and use
of a wide variety of implements that can provide you with a significant
tactical advantage over any attacker. Because you should never depend
entirely on technology or equipment, he also discusses hand-to-hand combat
and shows how at times it is possible to combine technology with body
weapons to defeat an assailant in the dark.
Swat
Teams: Explosive Face-Offs An inside look at our
first line of defense against terrorists and hostage takers Ever since
Charles Whitman gunned down over a dozen innocent people in 1966 from his
perch atop the University of Texas clock tower, "SWAT team" has
become a household word. In this compelling book, police veteran Robert L.
Snow takes us into the midst of the nation's heroic SWAT teams, allowing
us to eavesdrop on harrowing negotiations between killers and cops. He
gives us a balanced look at what SWAT teams do right and what they do
wrong and recommends ways to improve their tactics in future hostage
situations. While he gives no-holds-barred analyses of such dire failures
as Waco, he also celebrates SWAT's greatest triumphs-thousands of
incidents in which no one was hurt.
Tactical
Advantage : A Definitive Study Of Personal Small-Arms Tactics Read
this book and learn the combat-proven techniques big-city cops use to stay
alive and effective when the bullets start flying. Maintain the tactical
advantage in any situation by knowing how to search buildings for armed
intruders, use cover and concealment, maintain proper distance intervals
and much more.
Tactical
Shotgun : The Best Techniques
In his second book on tactical weapons, Suarez sets the record straight on
the true role of the shotgun in combat. He shows you what you need to know
to defend your home, family or business, including multiple hostiles,
low-light situations, moving targets and more.

Living: Attitudes, Tactics & Proper Handgun Use to Secure Your
Personal Well-Being This is the type of book that can appear to be
deceptively simple and short. But the content covers a broad range of
ideas and sophisticated experiences. Essentially, the authors worked hard
to boil down concepts to ideas that can be utilized or practiced, and most
of all remembered, in an emergency (when motor skills and thinking skills
are grossly impaired.) It's not written for unadvanced minds, it's written
for dangerous situations, when the mind becomes rodent-like and the body
Neanderthal. In other words it's the crucial facts

How
to Make Whips by Ron Edwards (Hardcover - March 1999) I found this book an excellent source for the beginner
and intermediate whip maker. I did not know how to make a whip prior to
reading this book even though I had read David Morgan's Book titled
"Whips and Whip Making" which does not really tell you how to
make a whip. If you want to learn to make a whip. This book will
definitely show you how. You will keep this as your constant reference
source.
Whips
and Whipmaking by David Morgan (Paperback - December 1972)
The
Bullwhip Book by Andrew John Conway (Paperback) This book is
excellent for the beginner. Conway is clear and to the point about how to
crack a whip as well as what to look for when purchasing one. The
illustrations are clear and easy to follow as are the written directions.
This book is a definite must read for anyone at all interested in learning
how to use a bullwhip. More than that, Conway doesn't just teach you one
way to use a bullwhip, but multiple ways to crack and wrap it as well as
the maintence involved. Definitely a keeper!
Knife
and Tomahawk Throwing: The Art of the Experts by Harry K. McEvoy (Paperback
- December 1988) I have always
wanted to know how to throw knives and after reading for just one hour, I
took several kitchen knives and was sticking them in the backyard tree,
eight out of ten times. I am ordering several professional throwing knives
and recommend this book to anyone interested in the art of throwing knives
or tomahawks. Towards the end of the book, the author shares a numbers of
very interesting stories about professional knife throwers and those who
hunt with throwing knives.
Knife
Throwing: A Practical Guide by Harry K. McEvoy (Paperback -
December 1973) Very good, short,
easy to read book. McEvoy shows you the techniques for throwing a knife
accurately. Reading this book will point you in the right direction.
Afterwards practice, and lots of it is what is going to make you good at
it.
Art
Of Throwing Weapons by James W. Madden (Author) (Paperback
- 1992) This comprehensive manual covers everything from the
history and development of the five most common throwing weapons--spears,
knives, tomahawks, shurikens and boomerangs--to their selection or
manufacture, grip, distances, throwing motions and advanced combat
methods.
Combat
Knife Throwing: A New Approach to Knife Throwing and Knife Fighting by
Ralph Thorn (Paperback - July 2002) Conventional wisdom among knife-fighting experts has
it that knife throwing is a pursuit best left to circus performers,
hillbilly theme parks, and hobbyists and that it is useless for combat or
other survival purposes. In this ground-breaking new book, Ralph Thorn
differentiates between "circus" knife throwing and combat knife
throwing, and reveals his style of knife throwing suitable for actual
combat and knife fights.
Ninja
Weapons: Chain and Shuriken by Charles V. Gruzanski (Paperback

Boomerang:
Behind an Australian Icon by Philip Jones (Paperback -
August 1997) To most Westerners,
the boomerang is little more than a toy, a curiosity or a souvenir to
purchase when visiting Australia. But for many cultures throughout the
ages, the ability to use this instrument has meant the ability to control
life and death. For more than 10,000 years, it has been used for hunting
and fishing, fighting, producing music, and as a sacred object in
religious ceremonies. Numerous boomerangs were found in King Tut's tomb.
This book is a wonderful way to help young adults explore Aboriginal
culture, learn about aerodynamics, and familiarize themselves with
Australian geography.

Trapping
the Boundary Waters Cook
had been in the Army Air Service in World War I and was a restless young
man after the war. In the foreword to this book, the author's son, Harry
B. Cook, describes how his 27-year-old father and a friend set out in 1919
for a year's journey into the woods of the Minnesota-Ontario border
country. They fished, hunted, and trapped and traveled by canoe and dog
sled. In the 1950s, after a varied career as a logger, owner of a
grocery-store chain and a dairy bar, and worker in the Office of Price
Administration in World War II, Cook took a course in writing and typed up
an account of his adventure in the wilderness but failed to find a
publisher. Decades later, his son has finally taken the edited manuscript
to publication. An interesting yarn that tells of Cook's adventures and
the people he met, this will be of interest to local history collections
in public and academic libraries.
Conibear
Beaver Trapping in Open Water: Master Beaver Trapping Techniques by
Wesley Murphey (Paperback - June 1997) I have read many beaver trapping books in my days and
hundreds of other trapping related books. Wesley attacks problems most
often encountered with beaver trappers in the more southern parts of the
country. The book is well written, easy to understand and flows very
nicely. The photos are clear and represent a very clear idea of the
subject matter. Wesley does an outstanding job teaching the reader,
whatever his skill may be, how to trap beaver by the hundreds if they are
available. The hand drawn diagrams add that personal touch and they are
easy to read. The writing of the book is flowing, easygoing and refreshing
after decades of stale old beaver trapping books.

Off the Land: An Illustrated Guide to Tracking, Building Traps,
Constructing Shelters, Toolmaking, Finding Water, Foraging for Food, and
Much by Chris McNab (Paperback - August 2002) Usually
ships in 24 hours Trained
soldiers will tell you that the art of survival relies heavily on two
essential skills: finding food and finding water. In any survival
situation it is vital that you adapt to your surroundings as quickly as
possible and make good use of the sustenance nature has to offer. Living
Off the Land contains everything the survivor needs to know about thriving
in nature, from making tools and finding water to eating plants and
catching fish. With over 120 illustrations, this book is packed with
practical information and insightful tips such as how to make a fire
without the use of matches and how to master the art of making traps and
snares to capture food. Later chapters adapt these principles to a variety
of terrain, including the desert, the Arctic, and the jungle, with a
special chapter devoted to survival at sea. Because nature can be a
dangerous place, the book also instructs the reader how to identify and
avoid dangerous animals such as snakes and spiders, the art of extracting
poison, and how to tell edible plants and fungi from poisonous ones. This
book will be an invaluable help to anyone who ventures into the
out-of-doors. The information it contains might just save your life.
