Let me qualify this statement. I am a pilot and have been practicing primitive survival living skills for seventeen years. My library on survival contains at least thirty books. This book is easy to understand and has multiple, detailed photographs. It should be noted that the section which discusses "eating mice for food" should be disregarded because the risk of contracting Hanta Virus is greater than the nutritional value of the mouse.

It doesn't go into a lot of long-term survival detail like some of the books do. I wasn't interested in trapping animals or how to dam a creek. I just wanted some good solid information for short-term emergency situations - how best to prepare for them and how to best avoid them in the first place.

In the area of food storage he could have gave some more information on extending the life of everyday products and maybe a how to find expiration codes. I would have given the book a 5 star but it was missing a few items....for the money, well worth the investment.

It doesn't go into a lot of long-term survival detail like some of the books do. I wasn't interested in trapping animals or how to dam a creek. I just wanted some good solid information for short-term emergency situations - how best to prepare for them and how to best avoid them in the first place.

Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (And Not So Wild Places) by Steve Brill, Evelyn Dean (Contributor) Paperback - 317 pages (May 1994) Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours. A reader from Tulsa, Oklahoma , August 31, 1998 excellent book Our Tulsa nature center's staff has included this as a recommended book. It has great illustrations, fine understanding of suburban and urban wild plants. And it has first-rate safety and conservation guidelines.

Edible Wild Plants : A North American Field Guide by Thomas S. Elias, Peter A. Dykeman (Contributor) Paperback - 286 pages (November 1990) Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours. A reader from Phx, AZ , March 5, 1998 Great edible wild plant book; pictures, not drawings. This book is a well-organized listing of edible wild plants in North America. Listings are by season, so you know when to look for a specific plant. Habitat is described including a quick reference range map of North America, as are how to harvest, prepare, and store foods for future use. A symbol key at the left of each plant will tell you at a glance what uses you can put a plant to; trail nibble, potherb, etc. Related edible and poisonous look alikes are also listed. This book utilizes pictures, something none of the other books I looked at did. I think this makes identification of plants much easier than relying on someone's black and white sketch or colored pencil rendering of something wild that I'm plan to eat.

I feel this is one of the best books on the subject of edible wild plants. It is very informative and gives a lot more information than other plant books. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the wilderness.

The book is designed as a teaching tool for children with "science project" ideas which help young children learn key principles about staying alive and getting found.
