Where There Is No Doctor : A Village Health Care Handbook by David Werner, Carol Thuman, Jane Maxwell Paperback Revised edition (May 1992) Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours. A reader from Salt Lake City, UT , January 1, 1999 Simply the best layman's medical guide, period. This book should be in every home. It was especially designed for people in rural areas without access to a doctor but the medical information is applicable anywhere. The way the information is presented - it is written to be easily understood by anyone and you don't need a medical degree to do so - is impressive. The wealth of information here on a large number of topics, from symptoms to treatment to possible drug side-effects, is also impressive. While most layman's' medical manuals deliberately withhold information and tell you to "see a doctor" for certain things, this book does not. As such it should be extremely valuable for emergencies. It is no substitute for a doctor but is indispensible for those situations where no doctor is available.

Comprehensive Guide to Wilderness & Travel Medicine by Eric A. Weiss, Rod Nickell (Illustrator), Butch Collier (Illustrator) Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours. Paperback - 198 pages 2 edition (May 1998) [email protected] from ESSEXVILLE MICHIGAN , January 23, 1999 EXCELLENT ! The book has paid for itself many times over . I am a field medic with the Michigan Army National Guard. I was so impressed with this book that I took it in to the armory, passed it around, and got seven of my fellow medics interested enough to buy the book. I keep a copy of the book in my medical bag for both reference and training purposes. When I am out in the field with the grunts (infantry troops ) I try to give a class or two on first aid. Some day I might be the patient. The book is easily worth three times its retail price.

Field Guide Wilderness Medicine by Auerbach, Paul S. Auerbach, Eric Weiss, Howard D. Donner Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours. Paperback - 450 pages 1 edition (October 1998) Excellent condensed version of Auerbach's original text If you consider Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine text to be "The Bible of Outdoor Medicine," then this will be a welcomed addition to your reference library. The field guide takes many of the most important topics from the original text(such as high altitude emergencies, envenomation, and trauma management) and paraphrases them just enough to be of benefit to both the weekend outdoor warrior and the expedition medic. I particularly was interested in the various ways to utilize common outdoor gear and improvise traction devices for orthopedic injuries. This book is also great in that it is small enough to fit comfortably in your backpack or glove compartment, readily accessible when needed. I highly recommend adding this book to your home or office library.
