NNCC Ages &
Stages - Nine- Through Eleven-year-olds Children of this
age develop a sense of self and find it important to gain social acceptance
and experience achievement. Friends become increasingly important. Secret
codes, shared word meanings and made up languages, passwords and elaborate
rituals are important ways to strengthen the bonds of friendship. Close
friends are almost always of the same sex, although children in this age
group are usually increasingly interested in peers of the opposite sex.

format. Human development is a lifelong process of physical, behavioral,
cognitive, and emotional growth and change. In the early stages of life—from
babyhood to childhood, childhood to adolescence, and adolescence to
adulthood—enormous changes take place. Throughout the process, each person
develops attitudes and values that guide choices, relationships, and
understanding. Sexuality is also a lifelong process. Infants, children,
teens, and adults are sexual beings. Just as it is important to enhance a
child's physical, emotional, and cognitive growth, so it is important to lay
foundations for a child's sexual growth. Adults have a responsibility to
help young people understand and accept their evolving sexuality. Each stage
of development encompasses specific markers. The following developmental
guidelines apply to most children in this age group. However, each child is
an individual and may reach these stages of development earlier or later
than other children the same age. When concerns arise about a specific
child's development, parents or other caregivers should consult a doctor or
other child development professional.
Children: How They Grow, Elementary School Children Ages 9 to 12
Children in the age group 9 to 12 years (middle school-aged) are becoming
"preadolescents." In addition to the changes going on physically, mentally
and socially they are also beginning to develop serious ideas about their
plans for careers. If children are confident and feel positive about
themselves toward the end of this period, they are better prepared to move
on to take more risks and gain a better understanding of themselves in
adolescence.
Two
Types of Love Messages for young people ages 9 through 12 Developing
healthy relationships is an important part of growing up. Young people have
many relationships including those with their parents and caregivers,
siblings, class- mates, teachers, coaches, friends, crushes and
boyfriends/girlfriends. Some relationships are temporary and others continue
to grow over time. As parents and caregivers, you can play a crucial role in
helping your tweens understand the complexities of these interactions.

reading time, and, of course, for creative puppet shows. Also in this
