Occurrences & Situations:
Robbery is defined by the
US department of Justice as: The taking or attempting to take
anything of value from the care, custody or control from a person or persons
by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in
fear.
Rape The majority of women think of rape as a stranger
jumping out of the bushes and sexually assaulting her. This is a good news
and bad news situation. The good news is that the "jump out the bushes
rapist is A) the rarest type and B) the easiest to avoid and prevent. The
same measures that
keep you from being robbed will protect you from being sexually
assaulted in this manner.

Women's Voice: Guns Effective Defense Against Rape A 1989 study (Furby,
Journal of Interpersonal Violence) found that both male and female survey
respondents judged a gun to be the most effective means that a potential
rape victim could use to fend off the assault. Rape "experts" considered it
a close second, after eye-gouging.

Mall Security America's malls face a challenge: keeping terrorists
out, welcoming shoppers in. We wouldn't put up with metal detectors, so
"mall cops" are left to guard the front lines. The nation's second-largest
mall company is right here in Chicago, managing everything from Oakbrook
Center to Water Tower Place. They're using video surveillance that might
impress the Pentagon, training their guards to study how shoppers act, not
just how they look. [Link recovered 7/1/11]
Mall Security Officials Adopt Israeli Safety Measures The recent
wave of suicide bombings in London's mass-transit system has heightened
fears in counterterrorist circles of similar attacks in America. Federal
officials stress there is no specific information that suicide bombers are
poised to strike here.
America's Malls Prepare For the Unthinkable The possibility of
suicide attacks against the nation's 1,200 enclosed shopping centers,
bustling icons of U.S. wealth and consumerism, is still only a grim theory.
But the mere idea has transformed the way private security companies, like
Mr. Lufkin's employer, IPC International Corp., train their guards and go
about their business. The inspiration for their preparation for the
unthinkable did not come from the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the
Department of Homeland Security. It came from Israel, the country with the
most experience keeping human bombs out of its shopping centers. [Link recovered 7/1/11]
Carjacking Facts Carjacking is the violent form of motor vehicle theft. It is a serious threat to our personal safety because the thief uses force and fear to rob our car from us. Sometimes the car owner or other occupants are kidnapped during a carjacking, and if lucky will be dropped off nearby unharmed. The worst case scenario occurs when you are transported to a secondary crime scene, which is usually more dangerous than the original confrontation. Those not so lucky victims have suffered other crimes like rape, aggravated assault, and even homicide.
Family Security at Hotels or Motels When traveling on business or pleasure with your family, it may become necessary to stay overnight in a hotel or motel. Your hotel room becomes your home for the night and is your sanctuary while you sleep. It is important to give some thought to what hotel or motel you select and what room you are willing to accept. The cost of the hotel room is not always a good predictor of how safe the room or property will be. There are a few rules of thumb that should apply to any hotel room you rent.
Family Security at Shopping Centers Shopping centers come in all sizes from the giant regional malls to the small strip-center with only a few stores. What they have in common is a parking lot. This is where your family is at greatest risk because of the "nature" of a parking lot. If you think about it, we are all strangers in a large parking lot. Violent criminals can blend in with the rest of us and get in close proximity fairly easily. Criminal predators can walk right by us and we will allow it because of the public setting.
Family Security at Bank ATM Machines If you or your family members use ATM cash machines on a regular basis, here are some tips that can make the process a little safer. Use only ATM machines in well-lighted, high-traffic areas. Don't use ATM machines that are remote or hidden such as being located behind buildings, behind pillars or away from public view. Beware of obvious hiding places like shrubbery or overgrown trees. ATM robbers like to have the element of surprise with no witnesses.
Family Security Travel Planning Whenever your family walks out the front door your home they leave that zone of protection that you have created. The secret to keeping your family reasonable safe once they leave home is to have a family security plan. To develop a family security plan you must give careful thought to the public routines of each family member and think of ways to make them safer from the violent people in the world. The best way to accomplish this is to hold a family meeting to discuss this plan and play what if games using different scenarios.

Street fighting Survival on the street is about a whole lot more
than physical prowess or fighting skills. People who live with constant
violence are cunning, vicious, dangerous and most importantly, they
cheat. This is NOT the same thing as the much touted "there aren't any
rules in a street fight" B.S. that Internet warriors (who touch
themselves while watching Roadhouse) like to parrot. The
"streets" have rules, just like any other place where human beings get
together and interact.
Tactics & Solutions:
Boys & Girls Clubs Gang
Prevention/Intervention Through Targeted Outreach
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America
has developed a special gang prevention and intervention initiative
targeting youth ages 6-18. Through referrals from schools, courts, law
enforcement, and community youth service agencies, the tested and proven
Targeted Outreach program identifies and recruits delinquent or at-risk
youth into club programs and activities. The initiative is sponsored by
the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) of the
U.S. Department of Justice. [Link recovered 7/1/11]

Preventing Car Crime in Car Parks [UK] The car park, as a managed
facility, provides a great deal of scope for controlling car crime.
Nevertheless, as this and previous studies have shown, thefts of and from
cars can be a serious problem in some car parks. Earlier work has largely
focused on evaluating initiatives taken in single car parks. This study
takes a wider look at the car park industry, examining the problem of car
crime in many different sorts of public car parking environments commonly
found in our city centers and towns, and at train stations. [Link recovered 7/1/11]

Addressing Community Gang Problems: A Practical
Guide Bureau of Justice Assistance, 1997 ~ Urban street-gang involvement in drug trafficking and violent crime is becoming increasingly widespread—not just in large cities, but in suburban areas and small towns as well. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) recognizes that programs aimed at combating gang-related activity must incorporate both crime prevention and crime control initiatives to be effective over long periods of time. Accordingly, in October 1991, BJA initiated the development of a prototype model of the Comprehensive Gang Initiative. [Archived

Girls and Gangs: Identifying Risk Factors for Female Gang Involvement
University of North Carolina, 1998
~ Nationwide there are an estimated 23,388 gangs with 664,906 members, approximately 3% of whom are female. Little is known about female gang involvement, particularly the factors which motivate adolescent girls to join gangs. Much of the research in this area is characterized by a gender bias with researchers typically ignoring this population or, when they do take them into account, utilizing male gang members as their source of information about females. This study was concerned with assessing adolescents’ perceptions of risk factors for female gang involvement. Particular focus was placed upon family, peer, neighborhood, and intrapersonal influences.
